CHRISTCHURCH BURGLARIES.

WORKING MEN’S CLUB RAIDED. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, IV•camber 22. Thieves made a visit to the premises of the Richmond Working Men's Club in Stanmore road last evening, and rcinoicd about £4 in money and a quantity of liquor, cigarettes, and tobacco. A side door opening from the yard was smashed to gain admission, and once inside the visitors ransacked the place thoroughly, leaving everything in a state of disorder. The tills were emptied in the bar, and the tobacco and liquor cupboards were forced. The well-stocked shelves of liquor offered the thieves no trouble, and a good hole was made in the stock. Mr Hughes, the manager of the club, who lives opposite, said that he heard a car tuning up outside his house about 2 o’clock this morning, but he did not think there was anything suspicious. The intruders climbed a high iron fence to got access to the premises, but left by way of the gate, leaving it open. The Richmond Working Men’s Club was broken into about two years ago, entrance being gained by the same door. On that occasion the club suffered more than was the case last night. An audacious attempt was made_ at 11.30 o’clock last evening to break into the jeweller’s shop of Mr A. H. Hancock, Chancery lane, off Cathedral square. A lock was broken off a w T ire shutter and a sharp instrument was used to try to force the lock of the door the woodwork of which was splintered extensively. Persons living above the shop heard a noise a little before midnight.
