A very pleasing change in the weather Was noticeable at Wingatui yesterday jnorning, and the course proper has rapidly recovered from the effects of the recent railfall. The inside of the track, which has firmed up, has been under a mild top-dressing where necessary, and it now promises to provide excellent going for next week’s meeting. A large number of horses with engagements nest week were worked, but none of them got through anything faster than nice striding exercise. Dumblane was treated to a qmet_ canter and seems to have settled down nicely. Lady Winton and Kin-tin-tin -were allotted lenient tasks. J. Ross has Solrose, Taboo, Little Duchess, John Bradbury, and Heather Lad down for the holiday meetings, and they got through easy tasks. Heather Dad looks rather big and burly in condition, and it may require some little time to work him into racing shape\ Phaster and Wine Tray did half-pace Work over a circuit.

Booster was sent a couple of circuits at a steady pace, and Set Sail got through a similar task. Ark Royal and Appian Way were sent twice round without being extended, and the former seemed to work satisfactorily. His form in the Oamaru Cup was too bad to be true, and either the state of the going or a mishap caused him to be in trouble all the way in his race. Wharncliffe, Coastguard, and Tholomon were schooled over four flights of hurdles. At the outset Wharncliffe dropped back, but he was on terms with the others before reaching the last hurdle, which Tholomon tried to miss and, hitting the wing, unseated his rider. Others out doing useful work included Overdrawn, Circulation, Brightling, Money Mine, Martis, Roseday, Green Cloth, Arpent, Traction, Haulage, Black Duke, Overhaul, All Smiles, Asemble, Real Glad, Lucy Locket, Miss Winkie, Wingatui, King Sol, Royal Head, Felony, Blue Dragoon, El Nido, Gay Queen, Good as Gold, Olympia, Cartoon, and a few ethers who all got through exercise of dn unimportant nature. Rapine is the only top weight to win the Auckland Cup since 1910. Acceptances are due to-day for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting. Desert Glow has grown in favour for the Auckland Cup.

A sale of blood stock will be held at Auckland on December 30.

The Acre gelding Royal Land has Joined J. B. Pearson’s stable, and will >e raced at the West Coast meetings.

Martian Spear, who won at the Geraldine spring meeting, has latterly been doing well on the track, and will be raced at the West Coast meetings. Merivale, the Paladin—Bonaria two-year-old filly, who ran third at Timaru, has trained on in the meantime, and may be seen out at the Dunedin summer meeting. A copy of the pocket edition of the New Zealand Turf Register is to hand, and is acknowledged with thanks. The book supplies full reports of the racing and trotting meetings held between August 1 and December 3. Overdrawn’s name did not appear in the published list of nominations for the Invercargill Cup, but Mr L. C. Hazlett states that his horse was entered for the race. Circulation looks in excellent shape at present, and is apparently in good robust condition for engagements at the holiday meetings. It is understood that Set Sail has been struck out of the Wyndham Cup, and Brivhtling for his engagements at the same meeting. The half-brother to Te Anau Lad and Eyed Ova is again doing useful work at Wingatui. The Tractor filly Traction was amongst those worked at Wingatui yesterday morning. She is credited with ability to muster a good turn of speed. Rumour credits two of the winners at Wingatui on Saturday with being very •olidly supported in the north. F. E. Jones may have the mount on Martarma in the Great Northern Derby. The imported sire Sands of the Orient recently died in New South Wales. Among the winners at the recent Ascot (Sydney) meeting was the five-year-old Paper Money—Subterfuge gelding Forgery, who was taken over to Sydney some time ago by J. M’Combe, and after winning him two or three races was sold there. In this case, however, the public were only waiting for the least indication of support coming from the right quarter, and Forgery’s price quickly made him a short-odds favourite. They had little anxiety as to the result, ns Forgery soon got into the lead, and went on to win by four lengths from another Maorihander in the Surveyor gelding Tripod. Although he has not met with any outstanding success since his arrival in Sydney, the New Zealand trainer A. D. Webster has managed to pay expenses with the team he has in work at Canterbury Park. He has won races on registered courses with Asleep, First Acre, and Jazz Baby, and at Ascot he was successfully represented by Moutoa Wonder in the sedond division of the 14,1 Handicap (says a Sydney writer). Moutoa Wonder Was a strong tip early, but when tie eased after some _ nice bets had been laid at a good price about him it was the signal for some of the “ hard heads ” to broadcast their supposed knowledge that Moutoa Wonder “ was not in the race.” This time, however, their information was incorrect, and the New Zealander defeated the unlucky Master Carwyne in one of the closest finishes of the a fternoon.

Outside Money Spider John Mauritius will be the fancy of South Islanders. Seldom has more exciting racing been witnessed on the New Brighton course than that which took place on Saturday, and the only easy winner of the day was Pan Yan, in the last race and 100 yards from home he was doing his best with several other horses in dose attendance The excitement attendant on the finish was a tribute to the work of the club handirappcr, Mr H. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES. (Special to Dailk Tim-sJ AUCKLAND, December 21. As he came north with the record of being a poor track worker local observers were not prepared to see Hapier do what he did on Tuesday at Ellershe. He was sent along with Papatu and Star Stranger, and the last-named practically retired from the trial at the end of six furlongs, finishing some distance behind the other pair. Papatu was a shade in iron: 01 Rapier, but one was impressed by the manner in which he stuck to Papatu, who is the best fancied of the light-weights in the Cup. Unless something bordering on the sensational occurs in the meantime, Rapier is almost. certain to retain his position as favourite. Te Monanui is a picture of condition, his race at Waipa last Saturday having sharpened him up. On Tuesday morning the son of Potoa proved far too good for Bennanee, but, in view of the fact that there was not a great difference in the weights carried, and that the Taranaki horse has to give Bennanee 261 b on Boxing Day/ this could not be regarded as an illuminating trial so far. as these two horses were concerned. Nevertheless the way Te Monanui finished in front o. Bennanee was very satisfactory, and the trainer of the horse was quite pleased with his performance. Cimabue sprinted at Ellershe on Tuesday morning, and got through his work in great style without being asked to break watches. He was sent oyer five furlongs with Silver Mine, the winner of the open sprint at Feiklmg a few days and runner-up to Kiosk at weignt-for-age the day before, but the Catmint colt was almost outclassed. Although the iourney took 65 3-ssec, it could have been bettered by both, and it is hard to say what Cimabue would have returned in the way of time had he been pressed to U. Count Cavour made some friends by the manner in which he defeated Footfall over nine furlongs on Tuesday, for he was full of running at the finish. Footfall probably needed a rousing gallop after his recent let up, and he should be all the better for the trial. Footfall has drifted in the betting since word came from Ricenrton as to his being sore, but it will need one pood gallop only to bring him back into favour. At Riccarton last month Great Charter shaped like a non-stayer, but the threo-vcar-old is one of those quietly fancied for the Auckland Cup on Tuesday. At Ellerslie he was responsible for the best effort from a time point of view over a distance when he ran nine fur ongs in 2min 2 2-ssoc, which was a tick faster than Rapier and Papatu. Great Charter will no doubt be one of the pacemakers in the big two mile event, and on uls sire’s side at least he has claims to stamina. Great Charter nearly pulled off the big event on the second day of the Auckland .spring meeting, being beat en by a neck by the dead-heaters, Masy and Star Stranger, at the end oi a. mile and ahad been secured up to Tuesday afternoon for any of Mr Lowry s llo Mandanc is not engaged on the first day at Ellerslie, and it is more than likely that she will be sent for the Summer Cup on Wednesday. This is an c\cnt that should just suit her, for she is very well On Tuesday she surprised the onlookers by beating Laughing Prince over seven furlongs, leaving him at the end and running the distance in a smart Imm 30 2-osec, the last six furlongs being cut out in Imin lßsec, which was a full second better than anything else registered tor the latter distance. When at her best Mandane is in the first flight of gallopers, and a middle distance is said to BU When Limited compounded after going for four furlongs in the Feilding Stakes it looked as if he was in a race Judging by the Absurd gelding a brilliant sprint at Ellerslie yesterday morning, when he cut out five furlongs in the very smart time of 64sec, he is about back to his best,, .and, such being the case, he must be given a good chance in the Railway Handicap, in which event he finished second last year. Limited will be Piloted bv L G Morns, who will do the rid ng for Fred Tilcly’s stable when the weights BU ]?resent indications point to Childsplay starting a good favourite in the 4 oal Stakes The filly was sprinted a couple of times along the back of the course yesterday morning with a yievy to petting her used to going oyer the hill, but she did not seem to mind the rise at all. Childsplay looks even better than when last seen by the writer at Irentham, for she has furnished a bit since thcn. ( Aussie has been referred to as a freak horse ” by one who has. seen horses gallop for many years in their preparation tor big events. Perhaps the appellation is in some ways correct, for no matter u hat time has been registered before he comes out Aussie manages to clip a bit oil the best. It was the same on Tuesday, when the Australian-bred sprinter went halt a mile in 49 l-ssec. This was only a tick faster than Gascony’s effort, but Aussie was asked to cover more ground than the three-year-old, being very wide out on the turn and doing it on the bit. Present indications point to Aussie holding ms place as favourite for the Railway Handicap.
