CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE
CONGRESS AT CAPETOWN. THE DOMINIONS REPRESENTED. . (Frees Association—By Telegraph—Copyright ) CAPETOWN, October 5. (Received Oct. 6, at 10 p.m.) Over 100 delegates from Britain and the dominions are attending the Empire Chamber of Commerce Congress, which debated a South African resolution urging cheaper ocean freights and quicker transit. The opposition declared that the present cargo rates did not pay the shipping companies, and a compromise was ultimately effected in an amendment merely urging the quickest transit. Another motion, urging that shippers he consulted before further lines are taken into the shipping combine was lost. The congress carried a Canadian resolution "urging the dominions to contribute proportionally to the British Navy.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
