RANFURLY NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspond *t.) RANFURLY. August 29. football tournament. On Saturday last the Maniofcoto Rugby Football Sub-union hold the annual tournament at Ranfurly. . The day was not promising in the morning, there being nj easterly wind blowing, it was very com and proved uncomfortable for the spectators, but as the day went on conditions improved, and some good football was witnessed by a large crowd. Ihe school boys plavcd in the morning. Alexander and Ranfurly 'met for the final, but the visitors proved too good for the home team In the Second Grade and Senior games, some fine performances wore witnessed. * The following won the medals School Boys.—Alexandra v. Ranfurly, 13 points to nil. Second Grade. —Naseby A v Ranfurly, 3 points to nil. Seniors.— Matakanui A v. .Gimmerbum A. 8 points to Tho following Maniotqto players have been selected to play against Eastern Districts;—J. M'Knight, C. M'Knight, 11. iDuncan, H. M'Skiming, L. While playing for the Becks team in the tournament on Saturday last, R. 0 Connell, of Becks had the misfortune to have his scapular broken. Ho was attended to by Dr Watson, and sent to the Naseby Hospital, where ho is progressing satisfactorily. BAZAAR. The Ranfurly Anglican Ladles’ Guild hold the annual bazaar in the A, and P.. Hall on Saturday last. There were numerous good things to choose from and a good response was made by the public. Tho stalls were neatly laid out and business was brisk. The stall-holders were:—Produce stall, Miss Inder; fancy stall, Mrs Indor and Dyke; cake stall, Mrs Geddes and Miss Blonc; sweet stall, Miss W. Inder; needlework stall, Mrs M‘Cowatt and Miss Screen; tea rooms, Mrs Glenn and Mrs Chapman. The sheep-guessing competition (57ilb) was won by Mr C. Inder and Mrs J. Crutchley. UNEMPLOYMENT. Men in search of work are to be seen tramping through tho Maniototo district frequently, some making for stations in hopes of getting a place for the shearing season. Others are trying their luck elsewhere. One reliable looking man said work was very scarce in tho country at present; ho had tramped all the way from Waimate, and had done only one day’s work. Ho was prepared to take on any kind of employment. THE WEATHER. For the past week tho weather has been very unsettled, rain coming up from the south east. Two heavy frosts have been recorded in the past two days.
