LAWN TENNIS

EASTER TOURNAMENT. OPENING DAY’S PLAY. GOOD PROGRESS MADE. Tlie Otago Lawn Tennis Association opened its annual Easter tournament on fha Anderson’s Bay, St. Kilda. and Otago courts yesterday morning. The entries received for tho 10 separate events in tho programme numbered 314, which is well ahead of last year’s total and quite on an average with those received in recent years. It must bo admitted that the weather does not usually favour this tournament, and appearances early on Friday morning, when rain began to fall, were distinctly disheartening. The threat, however, passed over till about two in the afternoon, when wetted the courts and delayed play for quite half n.i hour. A cold southerly wind made conditions unpleasant throughout the whole day, and interfered to a considerable extent with tho standard of play. The programme showed an unusually largo proportion of new names, and it is qnito likely that some fresh tennis taalcnt will bo discovered before the tournament closes. A start was made with tho men’s singles championship and handicap games on the St, Kilda and Anderson’s Bay courts, and the Otago courts were devoted to play in tho ladies’ sections. All things considered, excellent progress was made Tho third round of tho men’s champion singles was all but completed, the first round of tho men’s champion doubles earned well through, tho first round of both sections of the men’s handicap singles completed, and a start made with tho handicap doubles Tho first round of tho ladies’ single championship and handicaps were finished, and tho second rounds are well begun. . . In the men’s singles championship Bray defeated C. Sonntag and A. F. Rawlinson in straight sets without much difficulty. Sonntag, who is n rrr-ch improved player, ' a very good second sot against him. and for a li'.ilo while was distinctly troubling him. Tho match between Guy and Gale went to tho third set, in which Guy attacked Gale’s backhand and by benqtifully-judgod placements kept easily in tho load. C. J. Rawlinson and L. Cockorill, who mot in tho third round, aro two very promising young players, who possess a stylo and range of strokes that should carry them into' prominence in (ho game. Rawlinson defeated Cockerill 6—4 6—3. Considerable interest was taken in the third round match between S. G M'Dougall and H. S. Wilkinson, After taking the first set 6-2. M’Dougall wont down 6 in Iho second, but be recovered well in tbo final, which ho carried olf 6—2. One of tho hardest-fought matches in tho section was that between Cloghoin and Phillipps, also in the third round. Cleghorn won it by taking two vantage sets, 7 7—5, but on the 35 games played ho had the load of only a single game. There now remains in the men's championship ray, Stallworthy, Oleghorn, C. J. Rawlinson, M’Dougall E. G Boddy, and Dr Moody. Guy and Clark have yet to play off for the’ right to entor the fourth In the men’* doubles championship Guy and Moody were kept very busy by two vigorous young players, M’Pherson and Pollock. They fought every inch of the way, and went down with colour* flying 6—4, 6—4—an exceedingly good performance’ against player* qf such experience. Service Brothers won in three sets from Grcenslade and Wilson, and Sonntag and Calder defeated M’Adara unj M’Lachlan in two vantage sots. The three Otago courts wore kept busy practically all day, play being confined to tho Ladies’ Championship Singles, tho Ladies’ Handicap Singles, and tho Ladies Doubles. In the morning good tennis weather was experienced, but play had to be suspended for about half an hour at midday After that play was continuous up to's o’clock. Mr J. Leggett was general supervisor, and was ably asisted by Mr J. Fulton. Nearly all the competitors played good tennis, but a few of tho games stood out Miss Pattison showed good form, as did also Mias I B. Romans. Mis Fleming, in the handicap singles played one of the best games witnessed Both she and Miss Romans drove well and Miss Fleming kept her opponent extended but was slightly 100 inexperienced to win. A good double was played between the two Miss Romans and Mcsdames Nichols and Ramsay. Tho latter led 7—5 but the same good net play by the opposition accounted for their securing tho next four games, and eventually winning. Another good double took place between Misses Godfrey mid Aitcheson, and Mcsdames M’Uougoll and Dawson. All four drove consistently well, and in an exciting match tho former players just got home. There were, howover, many other exhibitions of good tennis. A* group of Anderson’s Bay Boy Scouts did good service as ball boys at the Bay courts. All men in the handicap events arc required to be at the Anderson’s Bay courts at 8.30 n.m. sharp. , . , The following matches will be played to-day at 8.30 a.m. sharp at the Otago courts; Miss King v.
