OTAGO RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

- EASTER MEETING. s - VARIABLE CONDITIONS. The Otago RifW Association commenced ita fifty-third meeting yesterday morning on the Pelichet Bay range. The competitors total 117, as against 138 last year. Colonel E. R. Smith extended a welcome to the competitors on behalf of the executive. Ha remarked on the increased number of new and young competitors present this year. It was a noteworthy fact, he said, that the meeting had attracted riflemen from various parts of tho Dominion. One competitor (Rifleman R. Anderson) came from Taihapo. Southland was well represented, riflemen from various parts being present for the first time for several years. Colonel Smith is one of the competitors, and he shot well yesterday. Among noted men present are Rifleman T. Fraser, a Kaitangata veteran, Rifleman P. H. Mackie and his son ({J. B. Maokie), Rifleman W. E. M'Keich and his son (Colin M'Keioh), Rifleman T. A. Graham and his three sons, Rifleman J. Mathews and son (A. G. Mathews), Rifleman J. H. Andrews and son (N. L. Andrews), and Rifleman W. Gillies and son (T. Gillies). Tho executive decided to hold an aggregate for shooting between the fathers and sons. The weather was fairly fine, with variable strong winds. The light was faulty at times, which baffled the men on more than one occasion. Although the shooting was not of the best, some good scores were registered. Rifleman H. Judkins (Christchurch) and Rifleman A. B. Kernich (Waimatc) put on 48 at 500 yards, and Rifleman A. Robinson put on 48 at 300 yards. Twenty-four tyros are competing, and also 10 territorials.

Lieutenant H. Montgomery carried out tho duties of range officer in his usual satisfactory manner. The marking arrangements were also well carried out, and the office work received every attention at the hands of Mr R. O. Farr, who posted up the results very promptly. To-day's shooting will commence at 8.30 a.m. The matches to be decided are tho Otago match (10 shots at 300 yards). North Otago Match (10 shots at 500 yards), and the South Canterbury Match (10 shots at 600 yards).
