FURTHER RACING IMPROBABLE. (Fbou oub Special Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 3. An unfortunate accident occurred at Riccarton this morning with serious results to Mr G. Gould’s promising two-year-old colt Jericho. The youngster went out to gallop six furlongs with Scrip and Bachelor, but after going about a furlong he was pulled up very lame, and it soon was obvious that he was seriously amiss. The seat of the trouble was in the ott fore fetlock, and the colt was in such a bad way that the horse ambulance had to be requisitioned to convey him to his box in W. G. Hobbs’s stable. The exact nature of the injury cannot be stated definitely, expert opinion being somewhat divided. One theory is that a small bone baa been fractured or displaced, while another is that the ligament has been torn away from the joint. Whichever theoiy proves to be the correct one, the colts injuries are so serious that his chance of racing again seems remote. His owner (Mr G. Gould) and his trainer (W. G. Hobbs) are to ne sympathised with over the accident, the cause of which is difficult to account for. Jericho is by Archery from the Martian mare Judith, the dam of Palestrina, Wink, and Jubilant, and high hopes were entertained concerning him. He won the Dunedin Champagne Stakes last month, and as he shaped like a stayer, a quality which his breeding also suggested, his three-year-old career was being looked forward to with interest by a wide circle of admirers. BOXING. ARRIVAL OF GRIME. (Pee United Press \ssociation.) AUCKLAND, Mardh 3, Billy Grime, feather, light, and Welter champion of Australia, arrived at Auckland on Tuesday, en route to Wellington, where he meets Charles Purdy in 15 rounds for £2OO. Grime is subsequently going to America in quest of the worlds feather-weight title. JANSEN DEFEATS JAMITO. (Peb United Press Association.) BLENHEIM, March 3. -V 15 rounds professional bout in His Majesty’s Theatre to-night between Raymond Jansen 9.11 and Salvino Jamito 9,11, went the full distance before a full house, which was delighted with the clean fight. There was some hard hitting, and wonderful footwork, particularly on the part of the Frenchman after the opening rounds. The fight was notable for the sportsmanlike tactics of both boxers throughout the progress of the contest. Jamito persistently bored in on his opponent, forcing the issue from beginning to end, but the Frenchman’s wonderful defene’e, clean hitting, and extraordinary ability on his feet offset the aggressiveness of the Filipino. The verdict went to Jansen, both men receiving hearty applause at the close of an even fight. LAWN TENNIS. .SOUTHLAND v. NORTH OTAGO. (Special to Daily Times.) INVERCARGILL. March 3.
