OBITUARY
SIR CHARLES WARREN. (Tress Association —Bv Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, January 24. (Received Jan. 24, at 9 p.m.) The doatli is announced of Sir Charles Warren. —A. and N.Z. Cable. General Sir Charles Warren, G.C.M.G., who was born in IS4O, was educated for the a?my, and upon leaving Sandhurst In 1857 ho immediately joined the Royal Engineers. After taking part in the survey of Gibraltar from 1861 to 1865 ho saw service in, Egypt, Africa, Palestine, and Arabia, and on his return to England in 1886 he became Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police for a period of two years. He commanded the sth Division of the South African Field Force in the Boer War, and was mentioned in despatches, He had a wide knowledge of surveying and land laws, and in addition to his military services he occupied a number of administrative positions. He was the author of several works dealing with his excavations in Palestine, as well as two treatises on the subject of weights and measures. MR PEROIVAL LANDON. LONDON, January 23. (Received Jan. 24, at 8 p.m.) The death is announced of Mr I'ercival Landon, the well-known correspondent, at the ago of 58. He acted as special correspondent to London journals in the South African and Great Wars, and also in Thibet. He also chronicled Royal visits to India and other notable events. —Sydney Sun Cable. ADMIRAL FITZ MAURI .E. CAPE TOWN, January 24. (Received Jan. 24, at 11 p.m.) Vice-Admiral Sir Maurice Fitz Maurice, who commanded the South African naval station, died to-day following a paralytic stroke. He was 57 yeras of age. Admiral Fitz Maurice served in the European war, and from 1921 to 1924 he occupied the post of Director of Naval Intelligence at the Admiralty.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
