JAPANESE EFFICIENCY.
AN AGGRESSIVE NATION. PEOPLE WONDERFULLY UNITED. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 22. “Japan is the most efficient nation that has ever come into the arena of history,” said Professor J. Macmillan Brown, in an interview to-day on his return from abroad. “The Japanese profess to be free from all jealousy regarding the possessions of other nations, he said, “but they are an aggressive nation. They claim to be defensive, but they are aggressive in their defence. The Japanese took Korea, which I admit was necessary to their safety, but they also have Manchuria, and are determined not to let it go. ~ “Japan’s power lies in the fact that its politics are its religion. Politics in Japan are not like the politics of other nations, where two or three or four parties are fighting. There are two or three political parties in Japan, but they are all guided by the one idea that Japan is the sacred nation, and that their Emperor is directly descended from the gods. No nation in the world with any control of a religion has ever been guided by such a rule. The Japanese can call up an army of 4,000,000 at a moment. Because after every successful war they have doubled their army and navy, and those 4,000,000 men will fight as one. Inspired by the sacred cause, they are willing to rush on to the bayonets of the endmy for the sake of the nation and Emperor. Australia is wasting money if it is spent on any military stronghold but the Singapore base. If Japan secured Malaya it would be only one step further to Australia.” Professor Macmillan Brown was very impressed with the unity of the Japanese Government. The Government looked after every phase of the people’s life. The socialistic idea of the Government as business manager of every concern had been incorporated there, the Government founding new industries and in every way guiding the people. In education the Japanese were the most enthusiastic people in the World. They were never idle, and that was what was going to make them a predominating nation. They were as united as the Chinese are for the present disintegrated. “ They have armed efficiency, and are anxious to become world masters,” he said. “If Japan could become wealthy, and it is a poor country at present, despite the making of money hand over fist during the war, it would be a masterful country indeed.”
