RUGBY LEAGUE

THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM. DEFEATED BY HUNSLET. (Frees Aasooiatioo- -By Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, December 18. (Received Dec. 19, at 5.5 p.m.) Hunslet beat the New Zealand League team by 13 points to 12. Hunslet scored three tries and two goals and- the New Zealanders two tries, two goals, and one penalty goal. '■ The match was played at Leeds in fine weather. There were 5000 persons present. Both sides gave an excellent display, and only the Home team’s superior finish enabled it to gain its first victory over an overseas combination. Hunslet pressed almost throughout the first half, and established a lead of 13 points to 2. Crowcher, following a brilliant passing bout by Dowson, Young, Broughton, and Guerin ran in and scored. Buck scored a second try. Guerin converted both tries. Broughton, with a fiue run, further increased the lead. The visitors frequently attacked, but knocks-on prevented the development of many promising efforts. Delgrosso opened the Now Zealanders’ account by kicking a goal from a penalty. The' second half was largely in the tourists’ favour. They played up very strongly, and scored early through a magnificent effort by Menzies. Delgrosso converted. Ten minutes later Avery scored a fine try, which Delgrosso converted, reducing Hunslet’s lead to one point. Both teams exerted desperate efforts, and both lines had the narrowest escapes, but the defences were sound. Near the close Brown was sent off for alleged insolence to the referee. , The team was: Desmond, Brown, Davidson, Brisbane, Sanders, Delgrosso, WilsonHall, Menzies, Parks, Herring, Thomas, Avery, and Mason.—A. and N.Z. Cable. AN UNHAPPY FAMILY. DISPUTE WITH ENGLISH AUTHORITIES. LONDON, December 17. (Received Dec. 18, at 5.5 p.m.) The Daily News says that a deadlock has been reached with the New Zealand League footballers in their relations with the Rugby League. Mr Mair and Mr Ponder refused to accept the League’s decision that Mr Mair must abandon the seleetorship. Mr Wilson, the League’s secretary, says that the decision must stand. A member of the League Council expresses the opinion that the council which is paying the piper regarding the losses will not stand any nonsense, and is prepared immediately to end the tour unless its wishes are met. Mr Mair states that it is his intention to send home forthwith the players refusing to turn out. The League Council meets on December 22, when developments are expected.—Sydney Sun Cable. SERIOUS TURN OF EVENTS. LONDON, December 19.
