THE TIMBER INDUSTRY. TO THE EDITOR. Sin.—At a meeting of the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, held on the 15th ultimo, Mr H. C. Campbell, the president, is reported to hav© stated that in the past 25 years (he price of timber in New Zealand had advanced by 500 to 600 per cent. I presume that ho refers to red pine (rimu) the timber mostly used in the construction of dwelling houses. If this is so, I say emphatically that his statement is absolutely incorrect. Will Mr Campbell state where he obtained this interesting, if somewhat fantastic, information from? Mr Campbell is a carting contractor, and no doubt your readers would be interested to learn what the percentage of increase on the cost of cartage has been during the past 25 years. Will he please enlighten us? —I nm, etc. Keith Ramsat. Dunedin, December 10.
