Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., went north by the second express yesterday. Dr Pickerill was a passenger by the second express yesterday on his way to Wellington. _ , , _ „ The scholarship at St. Bedes College, Christchurch, has been won this year by Frank M'lntyre Doherty, Outram. Captain M. Flynn, late of the Union Company’s steamer Waitomo, will leave Dunedin to-day for Wellington to await instructions. Dr Barnett, who has been on a visit to England and America, returned to Dunedin by the first express from the -north yesterday. Mr F. Train, of Rochdale, England, who has been on a business trip to Dunedin, left by the second express for the north yesterday on his return Home. Colonel C. Gray, chairman of the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board, and Mr H. E. Napier (secretary to the board) arrived in Dunedin by the first express from the north yesterday. They will leave Dunedin this morning, under the auspices of the Otago Fruitgrowers’ Council, on a visit to Central Otago orchards, and will be accompanied by Mr H. Turner, secretary to the council. At Monday night’s meeting of the Immigrants’ Club the news was received from Timaru of the death of Sydney Thompson, a native of Brixham, Devonshire, England. The deceased was a member of the club, and the committee decided that Mrs JonesNielson (the president) should represent the parents at the funeral, and also that a wreath be forwarded. Chief Detective Gibson, who is being transferred to the position of senior sergeant at Timaru (reports our special correspondent in Christchurch), holds a record for New Zealand in that he has served for 25 years without a break at the office of bis original appointment. Joining the service as a constable in 1902, he was promoted to be acting-detective in 1906, _and detective in 1910. In six years he was a detective sergeant. Two years after that he was senior detective, and in 1924 he was appointed chief detective. Mr F. F. M'Bryde, manager of the Queensland branch of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, has received notification (the Argus says) of his promotion as manager of the New Zealand branch, with headquarters at Wellington. Mr M’Bryde has been manager of the Queensland branch for nine years. He entered the society’s service in the head office, Sydney, in 1878, and has held appointments in almost every State and in New Zealand.
