CREDIT BY FRAUD.
A WOMAN CHARGED. SOME DETERRENT NEEDED. (Special to Daily Times.) . CHRISTCHURCH, December 9. Weakened by serious illness, a woman named Rosina Mary Barlow with a family of 10, whose husband, railway shunter, was earning a moderate wage, succumbed to temptation. She was charged with obtaining credit from Beath and Co. byfraud to the extent of £4 7s lid and £4 10s on two separate occasions. The Magistrate convicted the accused and admitted her to probation for 12 months, restitution to be made at the rate of 5s a week. Mr Cunningham (for the accused) asked for the suppression of her name. The Magistrate: Is there much of this sort of thing going on? Chief Detective Gibson: Yes, a lot of it. , “Then I am afraid I cannot make an order,” said the Magistrate. “There must be some deterrent to these offences. They are nearly always caused through people living beyond their means and trying to keep pace with their friends when they cannot afford it.”
