THE OPENING OF CANBERRA. SPECIAL ISSUE OF STAMPS. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, December 9. A special issue of 30,000,000 stamps of various denominations is to be made to commemorate the opening of the Commonwealth Parliament at Canberra by the Duke of York. The issue will be for one week only from May 9. It is estimated that 8,000,000 philatelists will require specimens. NEW LORD MAYOR OF SYDNEY. SYDNEY, December 9. Alderman Mostyn has been elected as Lord Mayor of Sydney for 1927. Aldermen Mostyri, Green, and Stokes (Lord Mayor) were the rival candidates for selection by the Labour Party as Lord Mayor for 1927. INCREASE IN PRICE OF MILK. SYDNEY; December 9. Owing to the dry weather, the price of' milk is being increased from to-morrow by 2d per gallon. The price to the consumer will be 9d per quart. TRAM SERVICES CURTAILED. SYDNEY, December 9. Owing to the high cost of working, the Railway Commissioners have decided to cease working two suburban and the Maitland-Broken Hill steam tramways. The cost of electrification is so heavy that it is not intended to replace the lines. The residents in the districts affected are making a great outcry against the Commissioners’ decision. SYDNEY TUBE RAILWAY. SYDNEY, December 9. (Received Dec. 9, at 11 p.m.) The first train on the city underground railway made a test trip which was highly satisfactory. The passenger service will commence on December 20.
