NORTH OTAGO.

COUNTY JUBILEE. The jubilee of the Waitaki County Council is to be celebrated next year. There were nine ridings in the county as at first constituted —namely, Oban, Otamatakau, Otekaike, Awamoko, Papakaio, Waiareka, Kakanui, Otepopo, and Moeraki. The first election was held on Friday, December 22, and resulted as follows: — Ohau, Hon. Robert Campbell; Otamatakan, Mr Duncan Sutherland; Otekaike, Mr William Sutherland 18 votes, Mr E. C. Smith 15 votes; Awamoko, Mr John Johnston; Papakaio, Mr T. Y. Duncan 76 votes, Mr Peter Aitcheson 51 votes; Waiareka, Mr William Young 79 votes, Mr John Reid 31 votes; Kakanui, Mr James Wheatley; Otepopo, Air William Craig 154 votes, Mr Thomas Henderson 72 votes; Moeraki, Air William Alurcott 52 votes. Air Joseph Culling 51 votes. The first meeting of the council was held on January 4, 1877. A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. The committee of the North Otago A. and P. Association will meet at 11 a.m. to-day. The meeting is being held earlier in the clay than usual, on account of the addresses being given in the afternoon by Alessrs D. Jones, ALP., and R. S. Forsyth, members of the Aleat Producers’ Board. A report on the recent show will probably bo presented to the committee. This is expected to be of a most satisfactory character. GAS LOAN. It is 50 years ago this week since the Oamaru gas loan of £IO,OOO was placed upon the market. In the course of a few days debentures to the value of £BOOO had been taken up. It is worthy of note that the gasworks to-day, in spite of the installation of electricity, play an important part in the domestic heating and lighting services of the borough. A new shop for the display of gas appliances is at present in course of construction by the Borough Council. BOWLING. The following teams will represent the Aleadcwbank Club in a match against Pukeuri, at Pukeuri, to-morrow: —Hartley, Rushtou, J. Denholm, Slater; J. The monthly meeting of tho South School Committee was xxi'csidcd over by Mr Barsdelb , . The Head blaster reported a serious drop in attendance during the month owing to an outbreak of measles, which had attacked some £0 children in the infant department alone, while many others were affected as contacts. Thus the attendance dropped as low as 363, on a roll of 470. It was decided to make the usual grant to the Ministers’ Association in recognition of their Biblc-in-School work. The annual distribution of prizes will be held in the Columba Hall, the infant department and Standard 1., at 10.30 on the morning of the 17th, and tho remainder of the school at 2.30 in the afternoon. The committee expressed gratification at the response of parents and friends to the prize funds. Regret was displayed by the committee on receipt of the news of tho serious illness of the school’s late head master, Air W. APLavcn. and the hope was voiced for a complete and rapid recovery. LAWN TENNIS. GENERAL. / The North Otago Alotor Cycle Club is joining with the Couth Canterbury Alotor Cycle Club in a run at the coming weekend. As a result of the increasing number of pigs in North Otago, another bacon factory has been established in Oamaru. OAMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council was held last night, there being present the Alayor (Air J. APDiavmicl), and Crs W. Crombie, W. Scott, A. Deal. K. Alaliau, W. H. Frith, G. Grenfell, G. White, J. AI. Forrester, and E. A. Cox. The Mayor reported that Aliss Pugh had agreed to sell to the council a portion of her land abutting on Thames street and Orwell street for a sum of £6O* —Tho action nf the Alayor and the town clerk in negotiating with Aliss Pugh was confirmed. The Manager of the abattoirs reported that during the month 155 cattle, 815 sheep, one calf, and one pig had been slaughtered at the abattoirs. The Town Clerk reported that in response to a request he had made to the Minister of Internal Affairs a subsidy of £2O had been granted to cover portion of the expenses of entertaining the American fleet. Permission was granted the Regimental Band to give a concert in the Public Gardens on Sunday. December 12. The Municipal Band asked for permission to hold amusements in the Public Gardens on Boxing Day. The matter was referred to the joint committee of the council, with power to act.

The question of rates and water services to the Wye street cottages was, on the motion of Cr Grenfell, referred to the Waterworks Committee for a report. The Manager of the Waitaki Power Board submitted proposals for street lighting and the illumination of the war memorials. These were referred to the Works Committee for further consideration. The office-bearers of the Baptist Church wrote asking when it was proposed to replace the fence taken betwen the church and the council property in Severn street. -—The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee, witli power to act. Mr John Main asked for permission to connect up several houses with the drain in North street. It was decided that permission be granted subject to the approval of the inspector, Mr Fischer. An. Australian company offered to insure the council against infringements of copyrights in the council’s hall. —The offer was' received. The question of securing a rubbish dump was referred to the Works Committee. The Drainage Engineer recommended that the sewage system be undertaken along Tees street from Test street to Wansbcek street, and at the south end of Usk street. He also asked for instructions from the council in regard to future work.—On the motion of Cr Grenfell, it was decided that the next area to be reticulated 1 be the area south of Itchen street to the railway line and the south section of Usk street. The drainage engineer was instructed to look into the question of draining those properties in the neighbourhood of Towey street. The Finance Committee reported a debit on the general account of £7969 12s, a credit on the loan account of £2382 Is Id, and bank deposits amounting to £24,000. The committee recommended for payment accounts amounting to £1287 10s on the general account and £409 3s Id on the loan account. It also recommended that the tender of the North Otago Plumbing Works at £45 13s 6d be accepted for sewer connections at the Town Hall, and that three members of the council be appointed to meet .a delegation from the Power Board in regard to the poles on Thames highway. Crs Fox, Grenfell, and Deal were appointed in the latter connection. The By-laws Committee recommended that the inspector be instructed to prevent dangerous games being played on the Drama Park.- —This recommendation provoked some discussion, bat was ultimately adopted. The Works Committee reported that it had no recommendation to make in respect to the complaint by T. F. Cahill regarding water from the eserve flowing on to his premises in Wye street. The committee recommended that W. A. Wilson’s offer of £25 for the old road roller be accepted. It further recommended that E. Austin's request for permission to connect two houses on section 19, block XI, to one drain be granted, subject to the inspector's approval; that the engineer be authorised to replace .lie kerb band channel on the west side of Eire street from Itchen street to the brow of the hill; and that the engineer be granted four weeks’ lea e of absence as requested. The Reserves Committee rcommended that specifications be prepared and tenders invited for the erection of a shelter in the gardens to house gas boilers, etc. The Engineer in his monthly report dealt with the street maintenance and construction work undertaken during the month. He also stated that during the month a break had taken place in the water race about half a mile east of Georgetown. Repairs had been effected by the staff. During the first 11 months of this year building permits to the value of £56,219 had been granted, compared with £55,685 for the whole of last year. The Mayor and several councillors commented upon the excellent work that had been done in Lynn street. It was decided that a footpath 13ft in width be constructed in Towey street. The Mayor reported that it had been decided to make important sanitary and other improvements in the public, gardens. Gas boilers and wash-up tubs were to be provided in a specially constructed shed. These would be much appreciated by picnic parties visiting the gardens as well as by townspeople. A charge of Is would be made for the use of the gas boilers. It was decided that the next meeting of the council be held on January 6. On the motion of Cr Frith, the Mayor, staff, and press were accorded the greetings of the council. OAMARU PUBLIC GARDENS. The Oamaru Public Gardens, which are! now in excellent condition, are likely to be sought as picnic grounds by parties from numerous outlying districts during'] the summer months. At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council permission' was granted the parents and children of Morven to occupy the gardens on December 15, and those of Kia Ora on December 16.
