(Special to Daii. Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 25. The timely intervention of the City Fire Brigade early this morning prevented extensive damage being done to riic building in Hereford street owned and occupied by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. An attempt to fight the lire from the outside proved fruitless, and the firemen then made for the interior of the building. Their efforts were hampered by the smoke which filled the corridor leading to the seat of the fire, but the blaze was soon extinguished. It is estimated that over £2OO worth of damage was done. Considerable damage resulted to the equipment on the second floor owing to the amount of water which had percolated through. The roof was also damaged by smoke and heat.
