C.J.C. SPRING MEETING.

CONCLUDED IN FINE WEATHER. RAPINE WINS COLD CUP. TRACK IX SLOW CONDITION. (From Our Special Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 13. The New Zealand Cup meeting: was toncluded in fine but cold weather. There vas a good attendance to view the final card, which supplied some very interestiner racing. The track was on the soit side at the outset, but improved considerably during the afternoon, although it remained slow to the end. Monoxide made the early running in the Suburban Handicap, in which Revel and Savonara did not seem to bo able to gallop in the going. Monoxide was done at the turn, and at the distance The Harp drew out and won comfortably by over three lengths from Sunny Loch, who beat Santiago by a nock. Goosestcp was a fair fourth, with Sir Roy next. Kalakaua and Sir Roy faded out after being well up in the early stages. After the rise of the barrier of the Crcssey Handicap, Booster, Lady Desmond, Mireusonta. Gold Brick, and Set Sail were showing the way towards the straight. Booster was in charge at the turn, and Rapier and Paperchase drew up on the rails. Set Sail and Mireusonta commenced to tire at the distance, where Rapier ran to the front witli Paperchase. In a good finish Rapier beat Paperchase by a head. High Pitch, who got a bad run, came through from the distance and finished third, over three lengths away, and then came Booster, Economist, Set Sail, and Mireusonta. The heavy going anchored the top weights. David Garrick went out favourite in the Seymour Handicap, in which Solfello and Solrose were first to show out. Goldtown soon took charge and led Princess Mafalda, who had began at No. 18, round the top, where Celerity II joined in. Dark Spot, Taboo, and Vcspcrus were dose up as they came to the distance, where David Garrick was coming on the outside of the field. Taboo shot to the front inside the distance and, drawing away, boat David Garrick by two lengths. Vesperus was throe lengths away, followed by Dark Spot, who dead-heated with Bon Homme for fourth place. Flaming Ray and Frivolous were next. Solrose lost her position and got shut out on the rails.

The Members’ Handicap proved to bo a good betting race, with Nardarino finishing a slightly better favourite than Licinus and Centrepiece. Inferno again gave trouble, and broke the barrier twice. Roues and Father O’Flynn were slow to move, and Fool’s Paradise was first out. but Arpent, who began from the extreme outside of the field, soon headed him. Arpent was about four lengths clear of Fool’s Parades as they ran round the top, but the former was done before reaching the false rail, with Fool’s Paradise, Nardariuo, and Licinus close up. Nardarino ran to the front at the distance, where Rouex appeared on the scene, and Centrepiece put in a claim on the outside. Centrepiece crossed over and appeared to squeeze out Rouex. (Centrepiece came on and won by a length

and a-half from Nadarino, who beat Rouex by half a length. Circulation, who was running in the ruck in the early part, ran up to fourth place at the finish, aud was followed by Father O’Flynn. Rouex must have been second if ho had escaped interference. Centrepiece ran a good race, as he was last half a mile from home. Rouex also shaped well, as he was last to leave the mark. Royal Cores was backed down to a strong odds on chance in the Pioneer Handicap. Ho and Money Peer wore first out, with Starflight next. Royal Ceres maintained the lead and finally jvon by a length from Money Peer, who beat Jericho by half a length. Jericho finished well and got up to cut Starflight out of a place. Royal Ceres appears to have improved with each race and looks sure to pay more than his way in the future. Ho is a wellgrown, handsome youngster and finishes on well at the end of his races.

Commendation was generally considered a fairly good thing for the Stead Gold Cup, but, tho glorious uncertainty of the turf upset tho favourite. Reremoana made the running from Grand Knight and Commendation, while Rapine was running several lengths away as they raced along the back stretch. Rapine moved up as they rounded the top, and Reremoana led Grand Knight and Commendation, who was on the rails, in to the straight. Ilapino came up on the outside, and tho position saw the favourite boxed on the rails. Grand Knight was under pressure at the distance, where Rapine commenced to forge ahead. Commendation was pulled out from the rails and sent after the leaders, but in the run homo Rapine stalled him off and won by a short half length. With a dear run Comomndation must have won as he stood Rapine up fully four lengths over the final furlong. Riders are not supposed to close in when they reach the false rail, but Barry, on Reremoana. did so and spoilt any chance that Commendation had of getting through.. Rapine, however, ran a good race, and if the pace had been more solid from end to end would have probably won comfortably. Commendation was going well when he got blocked, and his speed would have won for him in a clash home. They took Zo 4-ssec over the first quarter, and 40sec xor tho first three furlongs. Rapine s racing at the meeting improved his condition ano he looked fitter in the Gold Cup than in his previous starts at the meeting. There is now/ a growing opinion that ho should have won} the Now Zealand Cup, . Seatown pulled his supporters through in the i Stonyhurst Handicap as he was rather too good for the others at the weights. The card'was concluded w-ith a duel between Clarinda and Footfall in the Fendalton Handicap, and the former had to be ridden right out to gain the verdict, which might have been different if Footfall had not to travel round the field as they came into the straight. Ravenna ran herself out shortly after reaching the straight, and Full Swing also faded away after appearing to have a chance when heads were straightened for home. Vaward, who carried Mr J. M. Samson’s colours, was right up with the third horse and should prove useful in future. , , . Mr M’Nab did good work at the barrier right through the meeting, and the management was up to its usual high standard. The totalisator handled £65.029 10s. compared with £58.792 10s on the concluding day last year. The total for the meeting amounted to £197,305 10s, compared with £207,934 last year.
