GENERAL NEWS.

The monthly meeting o£ the Moray Place School Committee was presided over by Mr F. G. Paape. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of thanks to Mr Allan Bollard for his gift « >l . a valuable painting to be disposed of for the funds of the school. It was decided to apply to the Minister _of Internal Affairs to procure permission to raffle painting. The Head Master reported that** the roll number had increased to *615, and the average attendance toi 29a, which was very satisfactory. J h , e J e^ th of the children was good. He bad con ducted the proficiency examination last week, but the papers set by the inspectors had yet to be dealt with, after which the remaining classes would be examined. He stated that in all probability the school would be losing; the services of Miss Shaw and Mr Beattie, at present on the teaching staff, at the end of the yeai. The committee viewed the loss ofthsse two teachers with alarm, as besides their ordinary teaching duties they took charge of all sports. It was decided that Messrs F G. Paape and F. J. O'Neill interview Mr Beattie to see if he would reconsider his decision. The concert in aid of the school funds realised £IOO 10s. Messrs A M'Gill and V. Smith were appointed the Visiting Committee for the month. The Head master was given permission to approach Mr Tannock. in regard to building a rock garden in the school ground to raise flowers for nature study. The business of Enterprise Lodge at its last meeting was promptly _ dealt with, all brethren present being anxious for the syllabus item —children s night. The children assembled in large numbers, and a very enjoyable evening was spent in games and harmony. - T The regular meeting of All Nations Lodge was held at -P°rf Chalmers, and was presided over by A.D. Bro. Groves. The lodge approved of the secretary s action in forwarding letters of sympathy to Bros. Driver and Jenkins in their bereavement. Several important letters ot interest to members were held ovr until quarter night. It was decided to accept Sister Wilson’s offer of a trophy for competition, which will be carried out in the early part of next year. The secretary was instructed to write and thank Roskill Lodge, Auckland, for the courtesy and kindness shown one of All N ations members. Sick pay to the amount of £ls Us 4d was passed for payment. Bros. Steel and M'Beatb replied to the toast oi the G. E. Judges, and Bros. Castle and Gillet, of Timani Lodge, to that of the visitors. . „ . • , The Bay Lodge held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday night, when A.D. Bro. E. Bartleet was favoured with a good attendance of members and visitors. Correspondence and sick pay having been clealth with, the lodge initiated a candidate, A.D. Bro. Bartleet being assisted during the ceremony by V.A. Bro. Wilson and P.A. Bro. Napier. Bro. Wilson resigned the office of V.A.' so that Bro. Weir could again take up the position he previously held. P.D.P. Bro. Workman installed Bro. Weir into his office. P.A. Bros. Maybee, Johns, and Napier, who are aspirants for the office of D.P., were present, and spoke in reference to tho forthcoming election. The loyal toasts were given and responded to by P.G.G. Bro. Reid, P.A. Bro. Maybee, and P.A. Bro. Johns. A special toast was given to Sister Wilson (Queen of the Oak Lodge), who had that night provided the I lodge with a good eupply of refreshments ' in honour of her seventy-first birthday. ; Sister Wilson also provided four prizes , for a quoit competition among the members, the result being as follows; —Bro. N. Weir, 1; Bro. S. A. Workman, 2; Bro. E. Bartleet, 3. The members present paid their compliments to Sister Wilson.
