THE PRINCE OF WALES
AMONG FRENCH CADETS. PROMOTION TO "CORPORAL.” LONDON, October 30. A message from Paris says that the Prince of Wales, on the occasion of a visit to the famous Saint Cyr Military Academy, attended a strikingly appropriate ceremonial, every stage of which was intensely picturesque. , , , After a gold-fringed tricolour had been displayed in a hollow square of cadets, it was paraded side by side with a British flag presented by the King. , ~ The Prince afterwards placed a wreath formed in the shape of his crest_ on the school war memorial. It was invested with the traditional kepi, with plumes, and a sword, by a leading cadet, who recalled the Prince’s chivalry in the trenches where he fought shoulder to shoulder with the school's old boys. The Prince then joined the school, and was promoted to be corporal of the first cadet troop, a mounted squadron. He said, charmingly: “You make me young again. I am proud to think that I can be called ‘Le Petit Caporal.’ ” A veteran was so overcome that he proposed the toast of “His Majesty the Prince of Wales.” Then the Royal guest was taken to the dormitory and shown a rifle bearing his nameplate. He patted the on one of the little iron beds, to ascertain if it was comfortable. He shook hands with the delighted old “tuckshop ’ keeper, M. Malvina, and departed amid the rousing strains of the school’s variant of For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”
