NORTH ISLAND ROAD RACE. PALMERSTON NORTH TO WELLINGTON. !Peb United Pbebs Association.) WELLINGTON, September 25. The 40 competitors in the first Palmerston North to Wellington road race for amateur cyclists started at intervals between 8 o’clock to 9 o’clock this morning. The riders were from all over the North Island. A heavy westerly wind was blowing, and delayed the arrival of the first man at Wellington. The following are the results: V, Tippett, 35min (Taranaki), 6hr 29min 30?ec, 1. A-, Beattie, JOmin (Wellington), 6hr 42min 27sec, 2. . H. S. Webber, 40min (Wellington), 6hr S4min 25sec, 3. G. R. Chammin, 40min (Wellington), 6hr 54min 35soc, 4. The first scratch roan in was P. N. Robinson (Wellington), who came tenth, his time being 6hr olmin 2sec. The fastest times were those of Tippett and Robinson. The winner lost smin through a puncture at Eoxton. At Johnsonvillo ha ran into an obstruction on the road, and the handles of his machine wore turned right round and he lost six or seven minutes. Six miles from home he had another puncture, and rode to the finish on a flat tyre. Tippett was undistressed at any part of the journey. Beattie had a good ride to Ngahauranga Gorge, whore he collided with- Webber, v.ho was thrown owing to a motor car in front stopping suddenly. Robinson stopped for five minutes to help Algie mend a puncture, and had a lonely nda, as he had no company after he loft Levin. Flett, a Wellington man, hml a series of punctures which caused his retirement.
