UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT. INTER-FACULTY CONTESTS. The University inter-faculty boxing tournament for the Benham Cup was held last night at Marama Hall, and was attended by a large number of students and. their friends. The judging and refereeing of the contests was in the hands of the officials of the Otago Boxing Association, who carried out their duties to the satisfaction of everyone. Mr J. Campbell refereed the fights and Messrs F. Foster and H. L. Humphries were the judges. Probably the best display oi the evening was that of L. C. Cotter (dental), whoTought twice, and won both his bouts, thus being instrumental in securing. the trophy for his faculty. This lad is a good two-hapded fighter, with a. particularly hefty left, and although pitted against a couple of tough opponents in Mathieson and Foley, he won handily m both fights. , , , . Batchelor (medical) proved too good Rr Flynn (dental) in the heavy-weight contest, and had his opponent beaten badly iu the second round, when the reteree stopped the light. ... There was only one in the bout between Allan (mining and science) and Braitnwaite (arts), the former having things all his own way in all rounds Braithwaite put up a plucky fight, but was outclassed from the beginning. The contest between Uerguson (arts) and Trotter (mining and science) was a idling one. Trotter bored m from the start, but Ferguson kept a good stopping left going end demoralised him, being declared the winner by a good margin of points. Folov (arts) and Cotter (dental) gave the best exhibition of the tourney. Ihe former is a good boy, with any amount of pluck, but slow on his feet. Cotter, on the other hand, moves swiftly, leads well with his left and brings over a nasty right cross. Towards the end of the third round he had Foley very shaky—so much so that it is doubtful whether ho could have survived another round. . During the evening n pair of exhibition bouts wore staged by Hector Leckie, who went through two rounds with Harold Kindley and J. Harris. These contests were fast and willing, and demonstrated that Leckie has a future before him. He is in great fettle, and although he was fully extended by Kindley, he wound up full of dash. The following were the results: — Middle-weights.—W. S. Allen, mining and science (11.4), beat J. C. Braithwaite. arts (11.0). Feather-weights. —D. M. Ferguson, arts (9.2) beat W. D. Trotter, mining and science (9.3). Welter-weights.—L. O. Cotter, dental (9.12) beat J. Mathieson (10.4). Heavy-weights.—J. S. Batchelor, medical (12.2) beat E. J. Flynn, dental (11.12). Light-weights.—L. Cotter, dental (9.12) boat S. Foley, arts (9.8).
