ESCAPED PRISONER.
RECAPTURED AT DANNEYIRKE. STERN CHASE BY OFFICER. (Peb United Pbess Association.) DANNEVIRKE, September 23. How a Maori prisoner, who escaped from the Terrace Gaol, Wellington, _on July 23 last, was recaptured at Dannevirke last night was related in court this morning. It was known that the man, who is named Jimmy Walker—with several aliases —had made hia way to Dannevirke, and a look-put had been kept for him. Last night, while Senior Sergeant O'Hara was walking along M'Phee street, he saw an individual answering the description come out from a house, and followed him. The man quickened his pace, and then broke into a run, eventually making across country. Despite the man’s start of about 60yds, the officer gradually gained, and when in the vicinity of the saleyards. in Miller’s road. Walker gave up, surrendering to the senior sergant with the remark, “All right, sergeant, I’ll come quietly,” which he did This morning, in court, he was remanded to appear at Wellington on charges of escaping from lawful custody and also with stealing a motor cycle, valued at £65. on w-hich he made his departure from Wellington.
