N.S. WALES FINANCES

BELATED COLLECTION OF ' INCOME TAX. SERIOUS LOSS THROUGH DEFALCATIONS. * (Frees Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, September 23. The Auditor-General, in his anwal report, tabled in the Assembly, dealing with the Public Accounts, stated that last year’s deficit was caused by the extraordinary non-collection of the income tax within the proper year. The assessments of income tax belonging to tic year ended June 30 last, but issued after July 1 this year, amounted to over £1,500,000. The report states that greater activity in the Taxation Department would therefore have materially altered the financial position by giving a handsome surplus on last year’s transactions. According to the report, the Government in the last financial year was robbed of £20,000 through defalcations by public servants. • One man took nearly £7OOO and another over £4OOO.
