Daily Times Office, Saturday morning. Advice has been received from Sydney that the price of dressed rice has been advanced by 3Us per ton. An advance has taken place in the local market in sympathy with the advance in Australia. Reports from Singapore state that the market for sago and tapioca has firmed considerably. Retailers are persistent in then inquiries for supplies of zig-zag cigarette papers. There are none, however, in wholesale hands, and very few of any other brands of papers., It is reported that Messrs Henry Jones and Co., of Australia, who now control the K jam business, have also taken over the businese of Messrs Thompson and Hills, of Auckland. It is understood that New Zealand directors have been appointed to represent the Australian firm. Supplies of tea, especially qualities required for packing, are short in Dunedin at the present time, owing to the delays in the steamer services from Australia. Merchants are anxiously awaiting further information regarding the cargo carried by the ill-latcd Port Kembla from London, via the United States, direct to Dunedin The vessel is no doubt carrying a large quantity of goods for Dunedin, and some of the lines which, it is understood, are on board are required to replenish local stocks. The Australian Fruit Board has advised New Zealand merchants of a further advance in the price of New Zealand sultanas. The latest advance represents Id per lb in all during the past few months. . The Taimn, due next week, is bringing supplies of Epsom’s salts and Symingtons packet soups. . , , , A paiccl of white cotton twine, in balls and spools, has just been landed. At the moment the demand is for good lines of butter, choice bacon and porker pigs, stud poultry, good killable cocke rels, breeding sow pigs, opinions, vegetable marrows, prime table potatoes, and in view of the threatening influenza epidemic, there is a keen demand for choice navel oranges and lemons. Pears are short of requirements, eggs have been low in price, and we expect to see a temporary advance.
