FIRE IN HOSPITAL.
PATIENTS PROMPTLY REMOVED. GOOD WORK BY STAFF. (Pds United Press Association ) ASHBURTON, May 8. Fire broke out in the roof of the infectious diseases ward of the Ashburton County Hospital at 1.15 to-day. There were 23 patients in the ward, and these were hurriedly but safely removed by the doctors, nurses, and a willing band of other workers to the lawns, pending accommodation being found elsewhere. Only the roof was damaged, the prompt arrival of the brigade preventing the flames from gainiijg a hold, and the outbreak was subdued in a few minutes. The origin of the fire is attributed to the heating system igniting a board in the roof. Fortunately the day was calm, and no serious consequences to the patients are anticipated by the medical staff. The calmness with which the bedridden awaited their turn for removal greatly assisted in expediting the work
