FIRE IN TIMBER YARD.
ADJOINING CHURCH DAMAGED. (Peb United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 9. Joinery works at Sydenham, the property of Messrs A. H. Webb and Co., were completely destroyed by _ fire on Saturday afternoon, and St. David’s Presbyterian Church adjoining was considerably damaged. By the time the brigade arrived the timber in the yard was burning fiercely, and there was no hope of saving anything. The firemen’s efforts were therefore directed to saving the church, the roof of which was already ignited. The east end of the church suffered considerably, and the remainder of the building including the organ, was damaged by water. No figures are available as to tho extent of the damage. THE INVERCARGILL FIRE. In connection with the fire at Messrs M’Callum and Company’s timber mill in Clyde street early on Friday morning, Messrs Hunter and Reid, agents for the Royal Exchange Insurance Company, state that the total insurance over mill and buildings amounted to £IOOO. TJie building which housed the mill and was totally destroyed was insured for £l5O, while the machinery was covered by the same company for £l6O. It is extremely fortunate for the owners of the business that the large stacks of timber did not ignite (says the Southland Times), as it is understood that all the timber held in the yard was uninsured.
