LAWN TENNIS

NEW ZEALANDERS IN SYDNEY.

A FLATTERING COMPARISON.

(Pr«B» Association—L,y Telegraph—Copyright.)

SYDNEY, April 12. Referring to the lawn tennis match between New South Wales and New Zealand, the Sydney Daily Telegraph says: “Although New South Wales had an easy win, the result cannot be taken as an indication of the relative strength here and in the Dominion. With the execution of Anderson and SaJer, New South Wales fielded its strongest side. New South Zealand, on the other hand, was without the services of Ollivier, L. France, and Bartlett. Anderson is our foremost champion, and Ollivier occupies the same position in New Zealand. Saler, however, according to this year’s ranking, is the sixth best player in the State, while L. France and Bartleet, according to the latest New Zealand ranking, are the third and fourth best players. The visitors were not as representative of the Dominion as the New South Wales team was of this State.’’

THE MANTLE OF DOHERTY,

LONDON, April 11

H. W. Austin, who defeated 0. G. N. Turnbull, the Davis Cup player, in the final of the Wandsworth tournament, is a 19-year-old Cambridge freshman and a brother-in-law of Randolph Lycett.
