THE TfMBERS OF QUEENSLAND. Certain classes of Australian timbers are very Well known to New Zealanders, and to-day many of the Australian a redwoods are imported for special uses. In the early days a great deal of timber from across the Tasman was used for house buildings in towns throughout the Dominion, and there are still many houses standing that are sound, despite their great age, owing to the remarkable lasting quality of the wood. For this reason the big timber display in the Queensland section of. the Autralian Court is of particular interest to Exhibition visitors, and since November 17 the beautiful samples of the many varieties have been greatly admired. THREE HUNDRED VARIETIES. There are upwards of 300 varieties of timber in Queensland alone, and as a great many of these have high commercial value, they are well represented in the display, both in the rough as well as dressed, oiled, polished, and manufactured into handsome turniture. The display is divided into two sections —one showing many varieties of Queensland timbers in pianks and logs, the other devoted to a display of panelling, woodwork, and furniture. Between the two are sections of timber arranged in the. form of a Venetian blind that hangs as a canopy over the railings. There are no fewer than 98 varieties of Queensland woods in the “blind,” making a novel and interesting exhibit that speaks foi itself. The display was prepared by the Queensland Forest Service and there are many photographs ot areas in the State under the control of this important department.
