DEATH OF DR AXHAM
MEDICAN BAN NOT RAISED. THE PRESS INDIGNANT. (Frcs» Associstion—By Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, April 8. The death is announced of Dr Axham. Realising on Tuesday that his end was near, Dr Axham gave a friend the following message to publish after his death : “God forgive all. For myself I forgive, as I hope to be forgiven.” * The press publishes indignant articles protesting against the Medical Council not lifting the ban before Dr Axham’s death. One of the headings announces “Dr Axham dies an outlaw.”—A. and N.Z. Cable. Dr Axham, who was 86 years of age, was deprived of the right to practise in 1912 because he assisted Sir Herbert Barker, a bone-setter, by administering an aneesthetic while Sir Herbert Barker was operating. Dr Axham’s case aroused much liscussion in the newspapers, the public considering that Dr Axham had been unjustly treated, especially as Sir Herbert Barker was knighted. In January of this year the Royal College of Surgeons terminated Dr Axham’s suspension, and his name was restored to the list of medical practitioners.
