ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR LAWRENCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) LAWRENCE, April 8. A public meeting was held in the Town Halt on Wednesday night to hear the pro posals of tile Otago Electric Power Board in reference to tne Lawrence borough district Air Simpson (Mayor) presided, and a large attendance of tne public from town and district was present. Air Jasper Clark (chairman of the board) said that they were out to give information, and the policy was to extend to the outer areas as tar as possible on safe lines. He said that over 20 per cent, of the revenue of the colony came off the land, and if any community deserved tiie modern facilities oi cheap light and power it was the count! y district. He was out to push forward for the tanning districts with all his energy, Mr A. P. Alridge (engineer manager) then addressed the meeting. He first drew at tention to the personnel of the Otago Rower Board, who were well-known citizens from the various districts that the board operated in, and a guarantee that all business was transacted with acumen and to the best interest of the whole district. Mr Alridge outlined the policy followed by the board —its rating powers, and costs and charges for the various phases of the electrifying of homes, etc, for light and power purposes His report to the board was that the district was a pay able proposition, and the board had decided to reticulate the district if the resident* were desirous and took the necessary steps to link up with the Otago Power Board The following resolutions were moved and carried at the meeting. Mr John Edie moved and Miss Stenhonse seconded—“l hat this meeting approves of the action, of the Lawrence Borough Council and the delegates of Waitahuna and Beaumont districts in their endeavour to link up with the Otago Electric Power Board’s inner area, so that the aforesaid district may participate in the benefits of electric light and power as enjoyed by other districts in Otago.’ It was moved by Mr W. Carnet on (Wai tahuna) and seconded by Mr D MTntosh — “That it be an instruction from this meeting that the Lawrence Borough Council and all parts of Tuapeka and Bruce Counties affected take the necessary steps to get the petition signed and forwarded to the Otago Power Board.” Air Alridge was thanked for his lucid explanatory address. The feeling of the meeting was distinctly in favour of linking up with the Otago Power Board, and much satisfaction was expressed that some definite action was going to take place and that the reticulation of the district was in sight.
