BIRDS IN CAPTIVITY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l have read the letter of '‘Humanity" concerning the caging of birds. The writer of it is surely deserving of all praise lor the stand taken. For there is no possible doubt that to keep the beautiful "choristers of the air cribbed, cabined, and confined" within even the largest cage' is a cruel custom and worthy .of the dark ages. It is a Wonder that, in this'so called enlightened period, so barbarous a practice is still tolerated. As an extreme case, think of prisoning a skylark in a cage I Yet 1 have seen this done. If the majority of Dunedin preachers did not, as "Humanit?" l states, upon a day devoted to S.P.C.A. teaching, avail themselves of the opportunity, so much the worse for them. Quite lately I noted a large parrot in a small cage exposed to the full force of a < old raiii, and reminded the poor prisoner’s owners of their poor “pet's” unhappy condition. Truth tp state, they seemed duly concerned. Hoping this matter will be brought to a successful issue, so fains New nealand is concerned—l am, etc., Freedom. April 8.
