KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 30. W. Paterson was admitted to the Auckland Hospital in an unconscious condition, with head injuries caused through being knocked down by a motor car. THROWN FROM HORSE. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 30. Walter Lisle Tye, a resident of Takapuna, was thrown ’from a horse and seriously injured. He was admitted to the hospital in an unconscious condition, and it is thought that his skull may be fractured. SEVERAL JOCKEYS INJURED. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 31. During the running of the Takapuna Hurdles at Devonport on Saturday six horses came down and their riders sustained more or less serious injuries. Three jockeys were in consequence sent to hospital. B. Preston, rider of Daddy’s Girl, sustained a broken jaw, and was badly shaken. Regan, the rider of Mangahewa, was also knocked about. Fielding, the' rider of Irish Jig,had a collarbone broken. In the Suburban Handicap, Driscoll, rider of air Queen, was unseated and sustained bruises on his back. MAN MISSING. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 30. He failed to return, and is still missing. MOTOR FATALITY. (Per United Press Association.) NELSON, January 31. A motoring accident resulting in the death of a Maori named Mason Bailey, a married man, aged 19 years, occurred on the Rocks road late on Saturday evening. Deceased and Reuben Stevens, an adult Maori from the Maori pa, were driving in a moior which* after* lounding Magazine Point, on the Rocks road, swerved to the cliff side of the road, and then headed almost straight for the sea wall, breaking the guard chains oa the wall and failing nose first in tne sea among the rocks about 6ft below. Ihe : car struck head first, and then turned over -with its head facing the shore. Mason Bailey was pinned underneath and drowned. Stevens suffered slight injuries, and from cold and exposure, and it is feared complications may set in. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned in connection with the double fatality at Putiki on Thursday last, in which two girls, Elizabeth M Lean and Cicely Leigh, lost their lives. The coroner referred to the heroism displayed by Cicely Leigh, and said she was a brave little soul who gave her life in an endeavour to save her friend. The coroner also praised the action of two women who could not swim, but joined hands and walked in up to* their necks in an endeavour to effect a rescue. He recomi mended that the facts should be placed | before the Royal Humane Society. DEATH BY DROWNING. (Per United Press Association.) WANGANUI, January 30. An inquest concerning the drowning of Robert William Batty, an officer on the Kumar a, disclosed that he was sent ashore by the first officer with a crew of four able seamen to pick up Captain Christie. He was told to keep a mile to the northward of the North Mole so as to allow for leeway, but that order was not carried out. The boat was a mile south of the South Mole before he lowered the sail and rowed ujf to the entrance. At 100 yards up the entrance the boat was caught by the strong ebb tide and swell, caused by the wind, and crashed on the rocks. Deceased managed to hold on to a pile, but was washed away by the heavy sea. There ..were no lifelines on the moles, which the pilot explained could not be kept there on account of thefts. A verdict was returned that death was ! due to drowning. Unfortunately deceased had made an error of judgment in the course he had taken.
