INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE

MID-SUMMER CONFERENCE The mid-summer conference of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, commencing to-day, will be held in conjunction with Horticultural Week. The sub-committee met in the secretary’s rooms on Saturday, when final arrangements were made for the conference and for the loctunes to be delivered in connection with the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, The conference and all lectures will be held in the Kinema Hall at the Exhibition. The whole of the proceedings will be exceedingly interesting and educative. The institute is exceedingly fortunate in having secured the services of four eminent gentlemen to deliver lectures on matters of importance to horticulturists, and those who are interested are invited to attend, and ask such questions as they desire in connection with the subjects of the lectures. The following is the programme for today:—2 p.m., official opening of Horticultural Week display; 3.30, Dr J. Tillyard, of Cawthron Institute, win lecture on “Plants and Insects.” Wednesday, 27th. —Civic reception by the Mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P.), official opening by the Hon. W. Nosworthy, president’s address by Mr F. J. Nathan, lecture by Mr J. A. Campbell (Department of Agriculture) on the “Work of the Department's Horticultural Officers,” lecture by Mr B. C. Aston (chemist, Department of Agriculture) on "Cultivation of Native Plants,” special reports of committees as under: Educational (Dr E. Marsden), nomenclature (Mr A. H. Cockayne), species, plant registration, nurserymen’s status, citrus fruit improvement, and other business. Thursday.-—ll a.m., conference continues; addresses, remits, etc., and other business. 3.30 p.m., lecture by Captain L. MTntosh Ellis (State Forest Service) on “Our Timber Supplies; What of the Future?” The Horticultural Show will be held in marquees on the sports ground.
