RED CROSS SOCIETY.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meting’ of the Red Cross Society, held yesterday afternoon, was presided over by Mr E. A. Rosevear. A letter was received from the Otago Hospital Board conveying best thanks tor fruit and tobacco supplied to patients at Wakari Hospital. In acknowledging a parcel a soldier wrote, “Please accept my grateful thanks for your kind gift parcel, which was very much appreciatedi and also the kind wishes that accompanied it, I pray God’s blessing on your society.” Members were also pleased to receive the following letter from a patient recently an inmate at Montecillo Home. “I wish to thank the committee and the society for the treatment I received whilst a patient at Montecillo, and want you to know that I appreciate all that was done for me.” The Invercargill Red Cross Society wrote advising that it was supplying an outfit of underclothing to a Southland soldier referred to it 'by Otago.—Noted, with thanks. Two applications for clothing were sub mitted. On careful consideration of each case it was decided that no issue be made in the meantime. Mr Rosevear said that he would like to refer to the honour conferred by his Majesty the King upon a member of the Red Cross Society, in the person of Sir Alexander Roberts. Sir Alexander had represented Otago Centre at headquarters for some years, and they all felt that the honour that had come b, him was also an honour to the society. On the motion of the chairman it was nnanimusly resolved that a letter of congratulation be forwarded to Sir Alexander. A letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs in regard to the conference of representatives of patriotic bodies. Following, discussion it was left to Messrs Rosevear, Smith and ".he secretary to report at next meeting regarding remits. Letters were received from Wellington and Christchurch Centres thanking the committee for hospitality extended to delegates attending the recent conference. The visit to Dunedin was thoroughly enjoyed. Wellington forwarded reports from Sisters Webster and Clark. Red Cross nurses, in Taranaki and Canterbury. The reports show that the work generally is being prosecuted vigorously, and a number of the home nursing classes and junior circles are displaying enthusiasm in their activities. On several occasions the juniors have banded together and given very welcome assistance in needy cases. Wellington wrote advising that the Second Oriental Red Cms Conference, would be hold at Tokyo, Japan, on November 15, next. A letter was received from headquarters covering a resolution passed by the Ladies’ Committee in regard to centres furnishing details of expenses, comforts, etc., with annual reports. It was resolved that the matter bo left with Miss Williams and secretary. A report from Mrs George Roberts showed that soldier patients at Dunedin and Wakari Hospitals were being regularly visited, and that the comforts supplied were thankfully received Miss Williams reported that, following the holidays, the Home at Montecillo had opened again. Together with the matron, she had attended to several matters requiring attention. The action taken was confirmed. It was reported that the stock of goods at the soldiers’ Exhibition stall was going off very well. Several men came back earlier to make up fresh stock. Mr Rosevear said that sales for some time had been very satisfactory. On the motion of Miss Williams, seconded by Lady Ferguson, the monthly financial statement was adopted and a number of accounts were passed for payment. In reply to Lady Ferguson it was mentioned that the forthcoming conference of patriotic bodies would put finance on a comprehensive basis.
