THE AUCKLAND ZOO.
LATEST ARRIVALS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, January 25. The steamer Surrey landed this morning a young male orang outang, presented to the Auckland City Council by the London Zoological Society to replace the one which was lost last year on the way out. The animal is smaller than the female at the zoo, but when full grown will considerably exceed her in size. It appears to be in excellent condition. Three beavers were also landed off the Wairuna from Canada, one animal of the two pairs shipped dying on the voyage. These are tire first beavers to he brought lo New Zealand, and they appear to have made themselves at homo in the enclosure prepared for them. Every encouragement will bo afforded them in their exotic home to build a dam and storehouse. The zoo authorities have recently experienced a loss .by the death of the two cheetahs which had been suffering from some internal trouble since their arrival, and died within an hour of one another. Bird hfo at the zoo has increased considerably this bleeding season, the small birds in the aviary having multiplied to such an extent Mia f the central compartment has been added to their arm, and the macaws, which previously occupied it, have been placed on the stands outside.
