GERMAN WAR HISTORY
ADMIRAL VON TIRPITZ BLAMED. THE KAISER’S SNEERS. (Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, January 12. The Daily Mail says that the latest six volumes, covering 1908 to 1911, of the German Foreign Office’s “whitewash” book, which now extends to thirty-nine volumes, are designed to explain Germany’s attitude in the Great War. It is revealed that Admiral Von Tirpitz was mainly responsible for the war, because he continually secretly pressed for the building of aU types of battleships in advance of the official programme, using private yards, whereby he even hoodwinked the Kaiser. Meanwhile Count Mattorhicb. Ambassador in London, was repeatedly writing to Berlin declaring that the German naval armaments were greatly alarming Britain, and pointing out that an Anglo-German war would be inevitable unless Germany ceased arming. The Kaiser, sneering at Count Matternick, said : “He is only fit for a lunatic asylum.” Later Wilhelm became furiously angry with Count Matternick because the latter failed to nrevent Britain laying down additional ships. Field-marshal Von Moltke, Chief of the General Staff, urged the cessation of naval arming because he contended that Germany had no chance of defeating England. —Sydney Sun Cable.
