SANDERS CUP TRIALS.

RACES AT WELLINGTON. PEGGY’S GREAT PERFORMANCE One of the most interesting of the Wellington Sanders Cup trials was that of Monday, January 4, which started in a light southerly breeze. The course gave the three- boats—Peggy, All Black, and Wellesley—a run down to Coromandel Buoy, and spinnakers were out with the last flag. All Black carried hcr’s to .starboard and with the wind directly astern she soon caught Wellesley, which had gained a little at the start. Comin# up to the mark All Black was planing in great style, and she was first round by 41sec from Wellesley, which took in her spinnaker very early. Peggy was keeping her position, but she did not grain on the leaders until after rounding the buoy, 34sec behind Wellesley. She showed good windward qualities on the close-haul to Jorningham Buoy, and in the freshening breeze made a fair impression on the gap between her and Wellesley, while All Black was thrashing through the water in a spectacular manner. Wellesley was first about in a series of short lioards to make the buoy, but bad to go about again for Peggy and did not gain anything by the manoeuvre. Fogey appeared to carry too far to leeward, but there she caught the wind from Evans Bay, and when all three stood up for the buoy she was tc> windward, close behind All Black. 'lhe lastnamed was unable to make the murk on that board, and Peggy beat her round handsomely bv some, lengths. Wellesley also met trouble at the buoy, and she was some distance behind All Black when she finallv rounded. Another closA haul to the finishing line between Clvdo quay, and King’s wharves suited Peggy admirably, and'she increased her lead, crossing the lino 47soc ahead of All Black, with Wellesley a further 37sec behind. Peggy thus secured her fourth win oat of four starts, and her showing m heavy weather will be eagerly awaited. Peggy took the load soon after starting in the fifth trial held on Tuesday January 5 emd from that point the race degenerated into a procession. * At Coromandel Buov Png' T v had a big load on All Black and Wellesley, and bv the time All Black was round she was half-way down to Jerningham, with her spinnaker drawing well. Wellesslv was disappointing both on the run and'on the beat, and seemed ill-suited by her big leader. Peggy, on the contrary, never sailed better, and she increased her lead after rounding Jemmghnm Buoy, finishing over 2rnin ahead of All Black, with Wolleslev a further 3min behind. A patchy northerly blew' throughout the race.
