A middle-aged man named Rodger Midgley Plummer, a barber at Ohakunc, was fined £lO, and costs, for using obscene language on the Auckland-Wellinglon express last evoninm The evidence showed that accused made himself obnoxious to a party of Fijians who were proceeding to Dunedin to take part in the Exhibition festivities, and also to Europeans The Magistrate (Mr Young) stated that, had women been in tile carriage a term of imprisonment would have been imposed. Accused was convicted and discharged on a further charge of behaving in a violent and offensive manner to other passengers on the train. HOKITIKA, October 20. A fire at 9.30 last night gutted a fiveroomed cottage and contents in Upper Hampden street, occupied bv John Walsh. The occupants were not at home at the time of the outbreak. The insurances were £l3O on the house and £SO on tho furniture in the Royal Exchange office. CHRISTCHURCH. October 20. John Tipora Miutin Piki, aged 35 years, a. postal official at Tuahiwi, was charged that on December 16, 1924, at Nelson, he stole the sum of £7 2s, the nroperty of t! c Postmaster-General. Accused was remanded to appear at Nelson on Thursday. Bail was allowed.
