LAWRENCE NOTES.

ADVENT OF SPRING. (From Ode Own Cobbespondent.) LAWRENCE, October 20. The fine weather which we have experienced recently, though somewhat belated, has transformed the appearance of the whole district. Pastures are coming away splendidly and farmers are actively and energetically pushing forward with the work of the spring sowing of oats, ,ete.. that had bean hold up by the continuous bad weather. Given a good summer and fine autumn the man on the land should come out all right, despite the handicaps he has laboured under during the past few, months. LAWRENCE CRICKET CLUB. The annual meeting of the Lawrence Cricket Club was held last week when the report and balance sheet was read and adopted. The iinances showed a debit balance which, with a little energy, will be wiped off. The season had been fairly successful and in the matches played the honours were equally divided with the Beaumont and Milburn. The following officials were elected for the coming season:—President Rev. A. J. H. Dow; vice-presidents— Messrs J. K. Simpson, W. G. M'Kinley, A. Arthur, and Dr Sutherland; secretary and treasurer, Mr F. J. Gray; captain, R. J. Forbes; vice-captain, IL Cowie; management Committee—trie executive, and Messrs Bell, J. and W. J. Cavanagh. It was decided to accept the challenge o/ (he Beaumont Club to play a match on Labour Day, October 26, at Lawrence. ROYAL HEALTH SOCIETY. The quarterly meeting of the local branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Council Chambers on October 16. Pleasure and satisfaction were expressed at the result of the concert held cm August 7, when the total receipts were-£4O 4s, and expenses £5 Is 6d. It was decided to send a delegate to the general conference to be held in Dunedin in December. Nurse Lee's report for the quarter ending September, was as follows: Number of new cases, 7; visits paid to offices, 2; places visited, 13. In, the report a review of the new caises was supplied. The health of the older babies was also reported as being good. NEW COAL MINE. Numerous attempts have been made to exoloit the various lignite coal deposits in this district, but owing, to the cost of reaching the better quality coal and also to the fact that the lignite exploited, in the past has been inferior to the article produced in various other parts of Otago, the attempts to place it on the market have been unsuccessful. However, another attempt is being made. A good quality lignite seam has been unearthed at Craigellachie, near Beaumont, and has been pronounced eminently s-uitable for household purposes. A Kurow syndicate of experienced men are making" arrangements to develop the seam. Having i the advantage of being only about a mile J from the railway its position should assist the promoters in supplying consumers at ] reasonable rates. The indications are that) when operations are developed a valuable : seam of coal will be discovered. SALE OF RUNS. j Quite the largest deal in 6heep rune in , this district was transacted last week when | Mr Roger Tumbull disposed of his Glendhu run, comprising 21,000 acres, and also of Mount Pleasant Homestead to Mr W. Stewart, of Brookdale, Heriot. This, run, which is adjacent to the town, is looked upon as fair sheep country with good carrying capacity in all seasons. Mr J. A. Adams, of Bowlers Creek, who has a portion of the originally Bellamy Station comprising 12,000 acres, has recently added to his area another 600 acres purchased from Carson Bros., of Evan's Flat. This land is also ideal sheep country, and should well repay the owner for his investment. POLITICAL NOTES. Matters politically are moving along quietly here. The Labour and Reform candidates have addressed Lawrence electors. On Thursday, October 22, the sitting member, Mr J. Edie-will give an address. THE DAFFODIL FIELD. Notwithstanding the large ouantity. of daffodils sent away last week, there is still n bewildering mass of dancing yellow and gold and white blooms to be seen. The season being late, they should be worth inspection for another fortnight. A large number of visitors from all over Otago has made the annual trip to this spot. WAITAHUNA TENNIS CLUB.
