Tho fortnightly meeting of the Ivanhoe Lodge was well attended, A.D. Bro. Seddon presiding. Bro. Faulds was again nominated for the position of district president of No. 1 District, and a clearance v.-as accepted from a brother from Oamaru. The card tournament shield rules were adopted, and Bro. FaJds appointed judgo of the competition with Otago Lodge. The anniversary social was held on Friday night in the Victoria Hall, when about sixty couples were present. G.P. Brw. Churchill and Mrs Churchill led the grand inarch. Dancing was indulged in to music supplied by Bro. Williams'© orchestra. Bros. Henwood, Lunan, Wilson, and Seddon were M.C.'s, and tho catering was in tho capable hands of Mr Ellison. ( All lodges in Nos. 1 and 2 Districts were represented. At the monthly meeting of the Broad Bay School Committee, held on Monday evening, the inspector's report was considered and deemed satisfactory. It was resolved that the secretary write to Miss J. Pope, the schoolmistress, and convey to her tho committee's thanks and appreciation of her services to the school during a very trying year. The monthly meeting of the Caversham School Committee was held in the head master's office last Monday evening, the chairman (Mr K. H. Todd) presiding over :t good attendance. In connection with the application from the Presbyterian Junior Boys' Bible Class, it was arranged that tho gymnastic apparatus asked for be granted them on loan during tho committee's pleasure. The head master reported that the aver.tgo attendance for the October quarter was 631, whilst the roll showed a still further increase and now stood at 687 emphasising the fact that the overcrowdincr in tho school was becoming more acute. It was arranged that the choir picnic this year bo held at Itos9 Point on Saturday, November 17, and in view of tho fact that additional expense would 8e incurred over last year, the committee increased tho amount previously voted. The head master also reported on the arrangements in connection with the choir concert to be held in His Majesty's Theatre, and various members were appointed to look a'ter the matter of decorating the stage. With regard to the new school, it was noted with satisfaction that tenders had been advertised for and would be opened at the meeting of tho Education Board this month, to that the committee, hoped by next meeting to have something definite as to the date the building would be gone on with. The fortnightly meeting of the Dunedin Photographic Society was held at the club rooms on Monday of last week, a large number of members being present to hear Mr P. Beck's interesting lecture on Portraiture. The lecturer demonstrated by mean* of models the use of tho club's studio. He also showed various lighting effects by moans of screens and diflusers, and tho placing of figure*; in a group so as to ensure good composition. Taking a sitter for a portrait, Mr Beck illustrated tile correct placing of the hands and feet, also the correct lighting By means of special lighting, he showed how various effects could oe obtained. The lecture was most interesting and should prove of immense value to those members who undertake this branch of pictorial photography, .-rd should bo an incentive to those who have not yet portraiture.
