CROQUET.
OPENING OF TAIERI CLUB.
The opening day of the recently-formed croquet club at Mosgiel proved quite an enjoyable affair. The weather was perfect for the occasion, and there was a largo attendance, including many enthusiasts from the Outram, Balmacewen, and Punga Clubs. On account of the new lawns, winch are situated alongside the bowling green, not being ready for play, Mr and Mrs. Vv. Allan kindly permitted the opening to take place on the spacious lawn at their home in Gordon road. Mrs Allan and Mrs J. Sutherland provided afternoon tea. The Mayor of Mosgiel (Mr .T. 1. A alls) welcomed the visitors and declared Ihe season opened for play. He wished the club every success. The president of the club (Mrs Walls) drove the first ball across the lawn The local ladies not being verv familiar with the game, the Dunedin and Outram visitors gave an exhibition of play, and later on imparted some information. Mr E. Currie (president of the Taion Bowling Club) stated his pleasure and that of his brother bowlers that the club had commenced. On behalf of all concerned he thanked Mr and Mrs Allan and Mrs J. Sutherland for the hospitality shown that afternoon. The various sports clubs of the town were represented, and their delegates conveyed good wishes to the new club. Mr Allan acknowledged the vote of thanks that was passed to Mrs Allan, Mrs Sutherland, and .himself, and expressed the pleasure it had been to have so. many friends present for the opening of the season.
