COMMERCIAL.

GRAIN AND PRODUCE REPORT. Messrs Donald Reid and Co. (Ltd.), report as under: Oats. —A keen inquiry still exists for bright heavy samples suitable for seed. Values in consequence have improved slightly, and A Cartons are worth 3s Bd, on trucks, country stations, sacks extra. Wheat.—The market remains in much the same position as last week. There is very little wheat left in this district unsold, and stocks in store are now on the light side. Northern merchants are still, however, offering fowl wheat, and the bulk of local requirements arc being obtained from this source. Value to-day is 7s Cd, sacks extra, fcx truck.

Chaff. —Prime quality is in keen demand, and any trucks of this grade coming forward are readily disposed of ex truck. Value £5 12s 6d, sacks extra. Medium from £4 to £4 15s, ex store. This grade is slow of sale.

Potatoes. —The market remains on a par with last week’s report. Odd trucks are constantly arriving, and sales continue steady, and values arc up to £9 per ton, sacks in, ex truck.

Messrs Dalgety and Co. (Ltd.) report as follows:

Oats. —The market is quiet, with very few samples offering. The demand is chiefly for heavy A’s suitable for seed, which can bo quoted at 3s Cd per bushel, on trucks. Wheat.—Stocks arc low and there is a good demand for good whole fowl wheat at up to 7s 6d per bushel, ex truck. Potatoes. —Values remain firm, and good tables are now realising up to £9 per ton, ex truck. Chaff.—Prime quality only is inquired and prices have firmed slightly, and -nis grade is now selling at £5 12s 6d per ton. There is practically no inquiry for low grade chaff and nominal quotations are from £3 10s to £4 10s per ton. DAIRY PRODUCE. Messrs Joseph Nathan and Co.’ a Dunedin agent has received the following cabled advice from London; Butter; New Zealand, 216 s to 2205. The National Mortgage and Agency Company is in receipt of the following cablegram from Messrs A. J. Mills and Co. (Ltd.), London:—

Butter; The market is very slow. Salted and unsalted, 215 s to 2205. Cheese: The market is quiet. Canadian, 116 s to 118 s.

Since our last report the London butter market has weakened considerably, the chief reason for this being, no doubt, the settlement of the seamen’s strike. The latest quotations from our London house, under date October 15, 1925, arc 216 sto 220 s nominal, with no buyers. The weather is still unsettled, feed [is scarce, cows are in poor condition, and it is generally believed that production will be 10 per cent, to 15 per cent, less than last year. Prices steady, at 182 s per cwt this week. Next there will he an advance to 186 sßd per cwt. Melbourne: The market advanced on Monday, October 5, to 182 per cwt for choicest quality. Supplies are increasing each week, but the season is late on account of the continued cold weather. Brisbane: The local market wa a steady at 18Gs per cwt until Thursday, October 1, when an advance wag made to 191 s Id per cwt. Montreal reports under date September 4, 1925: —Market firm with good local demand, but with little business passing for export. Wo quote prices nominally 38i to 39i cents. Production has boon holding up well, but lack of rain for the past three weeks is having effect which will have a marked bearing on future receipts unless cnoditions improve. Receipts for the season so far, 409,603 boxes; receipts for last season, 350,414 boxes; shipments for season so far, 250,028 boxes; shipments for last season, 64,024 boxes. Stocks: August 31, 1925, 152,840 boxes. CHEESE. The market is firm with little or no New Zealand cheese available. The latest quotation from our London house, under date October 15, is UCs per cwt. THE DOHIXION BUILDING SOCIETY. The Secretary (Mr David Leslie) reports that at the meeting of the directors of the Dominion Building Society, held hist evening, a considerable number of applications for shares wgre received, and further applications are in right. Applications for loans without ballot were also dealt with. It has been arranged to hold the first ballot meeting on Friday, October 30, when at least £IOOO will be balloted.
