AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTORS

PARLIAMENTARIANS’ REQUEST. (From Odb Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 5. To-day the Minister of Agriculture was interviewed by Mr J. A. Ma-cpherson, Mr J. Bitchener and Mr F. J. Rollcston, accompanied by Air H. J. Talbot, vicepresident of the South Canterbury Farmers’ Union. Tli© deputation asked that two field instructors should be appointed to carry out the veiy successful work that liad been conducted in South Canterbury and in North Otago among the farmers there this season. It was stated that 400 farmers had attended classes at Oamaru and almost as many at Waimate. These classes were affording practical education under local conditions, and it was essential to have research into the matter of suitable manures for the limestone country of North Otago. Two instructors, it was stated, could more effectively do the work as they could co-operate in covering- more ground than would be possible under independent action. The Minister expressed himself in sympathy with the request. He believed this class of educational work would do more good than demonstrations on isolated experimental farms, as they could be attended by men who were working their own land in the actual district. He promised to give the application favourable consideration and hoped shortly to inform members that be would be able to comply with their request.
