OTAGO MEMBERS’ REQUESTS. DEPUTATION TO THE PRIME MINISTER. (Fhom Ou.b Own Cobbespondest.) WELLINGTON, August 4. The Prime Minister was interviewed by the Otago members, who placed before .him. a number of requests from the Otago Expansion League. They urged that' a larger proportion of the revenue from motor taxation should be applied by the Highways Board to road maintenance. Exception was taken to the annual changes in motor number plates. Another deputation urged that contributions from motorists should be allocated Qn the same principle as the tyre tax, giving- each island its share in accordance with the receipts. ■ Improved service on the Port Chalmers line and its duplication was pressed for. It was also urged that the Dunedin Post Office should be started during the next financial year, and that a new Customs house should •be erected. The members asked that power should be given the corporation to relieve the YJVLC.Ah of city rates. The deputation later waited on the Minister in regard to the extension of the Otago Central railway from Cromwell to Luggate. In the course of their remarks they stated that the directors of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition favoured daylight saving Sts it would, if adopted, effect a great saving in the expense of artificial lighting at the Exhibition. Several other matter's were reserved for representation when a larger deputation of South Island members can be organised. The Prime Minister said that he thought the Highways Board would increase the percentage for maJUteusnoGj but trier© would be no amendment of the Highways Act this session. The question of motor number plates was under consideration and New Zealand tenders would be called for their supply. . • The question of the extension of the Otago Central railway would be dealt with in the Public Works Statement. __ He hoped to make a start with the Dunedin Post Office in 1926.
