The salvage sale attracted wide interest. Many things went at bargain rates. The ship’s wheel realised a modest 3a, but there was fair competition for the ship’s hell, which the fire brigade eventually secured for 37s 6d. One prospective buyer put in an appearance in the hope that the ship’s funnel would he offered, as he contemplated using it to relieve the flood water in his locality. ROYAL MAIL STEAMER NIAGARA. Passengers who arrived at Auckland recently by the R.M.S; Niagara speak in glowing terms of the comfort they found on board her, and of the pleasure the voyage from Vancouver afforded. Regular patrons of the All-Red route are high in their praise of the improvements that have been made to the vessel’s accommodation. During February and March last the Niagara underwent a very thorough and extensive overhaul at Sydney, with the result that to-day she looks as spick aud span as a new ship. The woodwork and fittings have been repainted and repoliahed throughout, the public rooms reupholstered, and their furniture renewed, while the passenger accommodation has, where advantageous, been reconstructed, and the ventilating system extended and perfected. While it is only to be expected that the new quadruple screw motor liner Aorangi will have first claim upon the fastidious traveller, it is evident that the Niagara is losing none of her popularity. She. is a firmly established favourite with a large section of the ocean-going public, and in the light of complimentary references to her by passengers on the last southbound trip is long likely to remain so.
