TAPANUI POULTRY AND PRODUCE CLUB.

ANNUAL SHOW. The 37th annual show of the Tapanui Poultry and Produce Club was held In the Town Hall on Saturday last under adverse ‘weather conditions. Rain showers fell the forenoon, bpt the afternoon and evenIng were fine, although cold. The attend* ance was well up to the nsual, £l7 13s being taken at the door. The show as a whole was probably the best ever held by the society. Poultry entries showed a falling off as compared with last year, but, this may be accounted for by the fact that last year several important South Island championships were drawn by Tapanui. Mr Geo. Kerr (of Gore), who Judged the poultry section, expressed himself as more than pleased with the quality of the poultry throughout, stating that it compared favourably with any country show he had seen for some time past ine Minorca class was specially good, and the utility exhibits especially so. White Leghorns were a strong section, the pullet (utility) being worthy of special mention, Black Orpingtons contained some nice typical birds, of a pleasing beetle-green colour. Indian Eunner ducks were described as specially good. The feature of the show was undoubtedly the turnip section, which was judged by Mr G. P. Johnstone, of Waikaka Valley. The quality throughout was superb, and showed that this district Is unsurpassed for the production of root crops. The present season Is probably one of the bes. on /record for turnips, and Saturday s display would have done credit to any metropolitan show-in fact, Mr Johnstone, said it excelled some of the city shows he had seen. In heavy turnips there were some great specimens, and the winning three fscaling 911 b) would be hard to beat. There was a very fair display of vegetables (judged by Mr A. T. Neuonan, of Gore), and potatoes were particularly strong! Hr James Pnllar. of Crookston. was the principal prize-winner, and his exhibits iilclu led some new varieties, as a result of his visit to the Old year, which were favourably commented upon by the Judge. Carrots, beet and onions made a good showing, and a few exhibits of the latest popular feeding plant (Chau Moulder) wefe grown to per'"SfcGeo. Bishop (of Messrs J. E. Watson and Co., Gore) judged the grain and seed section, and commented very favourably on the quality,of'the exhibits. The prizewinning Gnrton oats were outstanding. Perennial ryegrass was of exceptional weight and true to type, and cocksfoot was one of the best samples he had seen. Mr D. Martin (of Beaumont) had a very line display of apples, and hams and bacon also made a good show. . , . . A guessing competition for the weight of n dressed sheep was won by Messrs D. G. Trip and J. M'Donald, who each guessed the exact weight, 741 b 2oz. The Brass Band and Mr T. A. M Kenjsie’a Orchestra provided a musical propramme in the evening, and with the aid Of the electric light the exhibits were shown to advantage. The ladies of AH Saints’ Church conducted the refreshment rooms in aid of the vicarage fund, anl did good business. The show was wall conducted, with a capable president In Mr J. W. Janold, and painstaking secretary (Mr A. Munyard), backed up by a good working committee. Mr Charles Armstrong, who had charge of the turnip and grain section, rendered valuable service, and went to considerable pains to secure exhibits; The following is the detailed prize list. POULTRY.
