\ CRISIS IN BOMBAY. OWNERS LOSING HEAVILY. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright DELHI, July 12, At a conference of representatives of* the Mill Owners’ Association and • labour leaders, in view of the crisis in the Bombay cotton industry, the chairman of the Mill Owners’ Association said that_if immediate action were not taken it was feared that they would have to dose down half tiie mills immediately. The owners wanted to avoid extensive unemployment, but they were also anxious to reduce their losses. If the wages were cut by 15 per cent, they would save six lakhs of rupees monthly. * The present monthly loss was about '24 lakhs of rupees. The men wanted a guarantee of the restoration of wages as soon as the crisis had passed. The employers promised sympathetic consideration to this request. Meanwhile the Government is being urged to suspend the collection of the excise duty, and to impose a higher duty on goods which are competing with Indian manufactures.— Sydney Sun Cable.
