MEN'S GAMES. Positions of teams ;

CITY v. TECHNICAL OLD BOYS. Tho match between City and Technical Old Boys was played on the Oval No. 1 ground, which was in an extremely muddy condition. Considering the conditions the display given was very fair. (Sty lost no lime in attacking. From the initial bully Duncan and Woodfield carried play to the circle and transferred to Mayston, who was unmarked. This player made no mistake in opening the score. Shortly alter wards the game player twice repeated the performance. Old Boys were doing a share of the attacking, but the solid defence of the City halves and the Ireland brothers kept them in check. City made continuous raids on Old Boys’ circle, and Davis in goal was called upon on several occasions. Handicapped . by the sticky nature of tho goal, mouth the goalie’s position was an unenviable one. Shortly before half-time Maroussen added City’s fourth goal, the spell ending: City 4 goals. Old Boys nil. On recommencing the game was more evenly contested. Old Boys attacking strongly. Henderson was conspicuous m a lino solo run from half-way, but when in the circle Ireland secured, and one of those lightning changes which give hockey the name of a fast game took place. With a beautiful clean drive straight down the line Ireland transferred to Mayston at the half-way line. The speedy wing took the ball down the line, and with a good centre gave Woodfield a chance at goal, which was accepted. Davis saved well, and from resulting play a twenty-five relieved. Old Boys were not to tbe denied and again attacked. Hinton secured and, eluding the opposition, took the ball into the net for Old Boys’ only goal. City again returned to the attack, and Woodfield was successful in adding another score. Old Boys conceded several corners, but sticks by the striker in robbed City of the advantage. From one corner Duncan narrowly missed, the boll striking the post. A further combined rush by City enabled Woodfield to score tho final goal. For Old Boys, Hutchings and Jory, the two junior full-backs, both played well. E. Jory was the pick of the half line. Of the forwards tho wings, who had the best part of tho ground, showed up most. For City L. Ireland played his usual solid game at full-back. The halves, as usual, were all reliable. Mayston, wing, was tho outsanding forward. The final scores wore: City 6 goals Old Boys 1 goal UNIVERSITY v. ALBANY. Owing to the state of the ground, due to the inclement weather, good hookey was out of the question. Nevertheless, a good and evenly-contested game resulted in occasional flashes of individual play. Tho final score of 5 goals to 1 goal in the University team’s favour was not a true indication of the game, but the Blues thoroughly deserved their win. Albany’s failure was due chiefly to bad shooting and lack of smartness. In tho opening stages the game was very even, both teams attacking alternately and both goalies being called on to clear several times, which they did effectively. Eventually from a scramble in front of the Albany goal, when tho ball was nearly lost in the mud, Button, centre half, dashed in and opened University’s account. Play continued to be very even, Albany being within an aco of scoring several times. Sinton and Dey wore prominent in the Albany half lino, but tho forwards lacked the necessary finish to achieve their objective. The University forwards made another determined attack on the Albany citadel, and succeeded in increasing their score. University 2 goals, Albany nil. From the bully they attacked again, and Twose made a good savew Albany made a good combined run to the other end and were in an attacking position when half-time was called with tho score unaltered. Tho second spell was similar to tho first in that play was very patchy, but even, both sides attacking with groat persistency. Tho third goal for University was scored from a scramble, and shortly afterwards their inside right added another score. Os< borne and Wallace were playing good defensive games for Albany, but the combined efforts of the opposing forwards were well rewarded. Tho Albany forwards then set up an attack, and from a good combined run Gardiner scored their only goal. University 4 goals, Albany 1 goal. Albany attaokodl again from the ensuing bully, and University conceded a corner which they managed to clear, their forwards breaking away. Their attack was repulsed, however, and oven play followed for a short time. From a good combined effort tho ball went out to the University right winger, who scored with a hot shot. Play continued up and down tho field until tho final whistle went with the score unaltered. The final scores were: University ... 5 goals Albany 1 goal Messrs Paterson and Johnston controlled the game. SECOND GRADE Positions of teams:
