GENERAL NEWS.

The monthly meeting of the Tomahawk Road Board, held on Monday, was attended by Messrs Robertson (chairman), Hor rocks, Mack, and Mathieson. The chairman made feeling reference to the death of an exmeihber of the board, Mr A. Smaill, and a motion of sympathy was passed. Four applications for building permits were approved. It was decided to repair pot holes as soon as watortables were cleared out. Accounts amounting to £EO 19s 5d were passed for payment. Mr Frank Bennett, the well-known Dunedin pianist, who will shortly depart for Europe, broadcasted a recital from Station 4-YA on Thursday evening. His interpretation of compositions by such celebrated composers as Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin was a revelation of what could bo done by local talent, and according to reports received by telephone each item was broaocasted perfectly. Mr Bennett’s programme included the following solos: —Bach’s “Chromatic Fantasie” and “Fugue,” GlucfitBrahm’s “Gavotte,” Brahm’s “Waltz in B Flat,” Chopin’s “Study in 6ths,” Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,’ “The Black Key, ’ “The Butterfly Study,” “Prelude” (Chopin), “Arietta lxo ; ’ ’ Chopin’s “Etude in A Flat” (water music), “Fantasie Impromptue,” “Gavotte Oorelli-Friedenthal,” “Nocturne E Flat” (Chopin), “Study in B Minor.” The members and supporters of the Kiwi Defence Rifle dub held their annual social and presentation of prizes at the Waratah Tea Rooms on Thursday evening last. The social took the form of a euchre tournament, the prizes being won by Miss Ogg and Mr F. Grave, the booby prizes going to Miss B. Steven and Mr F. S. Webster. The president of the club (Mr F. Silvias) presented the different prizes to the v.'.liners, the champion shot of the club this year being Rifleman W. Mills, with Rifleman R. Gillick second, after being champion for four years in succession. The champion shot in B Grade was Rifleman D. McLaren, with Rifleman P. Fennessy second. The club hod also won the Ladies’ Challenge Shield at the last Easter meeting for the fourth year in succession, the winners this year being Riflemen F. day ton, W. Crimp, R. Gilliok, W. Mills, and R. R.' Johnston. After supper musical items were given, songs being rendered by Mrs D. Parsons, Mr Parkin, Mrs F. Ramagu, and Mr Rogers, and a duet by Mrs R. KJohnston and Mr Parkin. Mrs I. Grant and Mrs Johnston accompanied the singers at the piano.
