INDIA’S LARGE EXPORTS. CALCUTTA, June 25. Addressing the gathering at a Rotary Club luncheon at CaJcutta, Mr Charters, a director of Burn and Co., an Indian iron and steel company, said that during the year ended March 31 last India had produced 830,000 tons of pig iron, of which 400,000 Cons were used in steelmaking, 120,000 tons of which were used in India, while about 300,000 tons were exported. India actually exported to Glasgow and Middlesborough at a profit, he said. The reasons for this successful trade were not the cheapness of Indian labour, hut the excellence of the raw materials, the favourable geographical position of India, and finally modern works equipped with every labour-saving device. India was exporting pig iron to almost ever-,- country in the world, lie concluded.
